And You Rejoice

So, I open my devotional magazine (Sports Illustrated) and read a wonderful story about Christian forgiveness (Sept 17 edition: "The Boy They Couldn't Kill"). I particularly liked this simple description of what common grace is about.

"What she learned at Mount Olive was an overwhelming sense of gratitude for life. The sense that you don't wake up unless God opens your eyes, don't see the rising sun unless God pulls it from the horizon, don't put food in your mouth unless God helps you hold the fork. And you do all these things and you rejoice."

APS Banquet

Julie Yoon sent this in to me:

May I give you my little plug about the Annual Alpha Pregnancy Fundraiser banquet being held October 18? Sophie Kim posted a "save the date" message for me on your blog back in August, but I'm sure many have forgotten about this. As a board member I'm asking if you can spread the news....It's an enjoyable event that people at Tenth should come. They will enjoy a nice dinner while listening to inspiring testimonies of some of Alpha's clients....mainly moms and their stories of how they kept their babies and how Alpha helped them. There will also be a guest speaker who will definitely share profound, meaningful views about how to impact the women and their families in Philadelphia. I have been telling people to make it a [unromantic/unprivate] date night, girls' night out, guys' night out, a Bible study group fellowship outing. Here is the link to the event. Even if people cannot come, there is still a way for them to make a one time donation or become monthly donors on the website.

Ethics and Wisdom

Proverbs 11:6

The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust.

You should be picking up a theme by now: to be righteous is to be wise, which leads to success; to be wicked is to be foolish, which leads to failure. Because the focus of the righteous is to do what is right, God will deliver them; also, the focus on doing right gives them clarity about reality and discernment into wisdom. Read more »

Parishes in the Catacombs

I see that members of Parish 3 is being asked to sit in the Catacombs this coming Sunday for the 11:00 service. No, they have not been bad; well, not all of them. We are asking all the parishes to take turns gathering down there for 11:00 worship. It eases the crowding in the sanctuary. But a serendipity (bet you haven't heard that word in a long time) has been the effect of enhancing community within the parishes. How do you know which Sunday is your parish's turn? The parishes rotate in order. If this Sunday is Parish 3, you can expect Parish 4 will be next.

Walking in Balance

Proverbs 11:5

The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight,
but the wicked falls by his own wickedness.

How does the gymnast on the balance beam keep her balance? For one thing she keeps her head straight and eyes focused. To stay on the straight path, we must keep our head straight, following the righteous laws and commands of Scripture. Such laws steady us and keep us on the right track. Read more »

Welcome, Eliana Grace!

Greg and Aubry Kieselowsky are pleased to announce the arrival of Eliana Grace on September 7.

Click Old Town

Okay, everyone. My family reputation is at stake. My sister in Texas has asked her family and friends to click on the website of her and her husband's family business, a venue for weddings and other occasions. This will help the site get more notice on the internet. So, I assured her that today and tomorrow she can expect a surge of hits on the website. Don't let me down. I'm just asking you to click once for Old Town at Hollow Hill Farm.

Dying Well

Proverbs 11:4

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath,
but righteousness delivers from death.

In medical news a report was published that people with at least $70,000 in assets die better. Their last year of life is less painful, presumably because they can afford better healthcare and have more leverage in demanding good care.

Wise Integrity

Proverbs 11:3

The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.

Like the previous proverb, verse 3 presents the connection between virtue and wisdom, and between sin and foolishness. We are often taught that to think we can maintain integrity in the business world, or academics, or whatever field is to be naive. Everyone else compromises or outright cheats; we must compromise our ethics if we are to keep pace, especially such teachings as in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

Wise Humility

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with the humble is wisdom.
.

Jesus’ parable in Luke 14:7-11 provides commentary for this proverb. The person, who out of pride, sits himself at the head of the table is disgraced when asked to take a lower seat; while the humble person ends up honored. It is interesting that the proverb connects humility with wisdom. It makes sense.
