Maranatha Winter Retreat

All teen students and friends are invited to our annual winter retreat at Camp Sankanac on Feb 12-14.

This is a weekend of rich teaching and fellowship, as well as other craziness such as capture the flag, and a talent show. The theme of the weekend is The Call to Discipleship and our speaker will be David Clyde from Richhill Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland (one of our missions partners).

Brochures and liability release forms are available at the Maranatha bulletin board in the Delancey lobby.

Registration will be held in Reception Hall after all three worship services both this Sunday Jan 31 and next Sunday Feb 7.

For more information contact Jonny at jmcgreevy@tenth.org

Benefit Concert

Don't forget Friday night's benefit concert for Hait - 7:30 in the sanctuary. Performances by Curtis students. See earlier posting for more information.

Tile and Carpet

I just sneaked into the sanctuary to see what's going with the flooring. They've started the tile! Pat tells me the project is challenging due to the floor not being level. In a similar vein, the laying of carpet on the stairways is a challenge due to the bases of the walls not being straight. Funny how only 150 years can affect a building.

Condo for Sale

It has been fun watching my neighbor get married, then having a baby. But now she and her family are moving, which isn't so fun. I begrudgingly give this link to help sell her condo (though all applicants have to go through a thorough screening by her next-door neighbor).

Radical Fishing

Dear Paul Tripp,

I've just looked at the titles of your two sermons for Sunday. I must say that it is hard to take your morning sermon seriously "Radical Change," when your evening sermon is "Gone Fishing"!

The Mighty Acts of God

The Mighty Acts of God is a new story book featured at Westminster Bookstore. Check it out at this link. I have not read it, but have read articles by the author Starr Meade in Modern Reformation. Worth checking out.

How God Has Provided

The Kingdom Discipleship Commission will be giving a presentation on Vision Night (March 19). The theme is “God Provides.” We would like to present personal testimony of how God has provided for his people at Tenth through the church's ministries. Do you have a testimony to give of how God provided for you through a ministry or activity of the church? Or maybe your testimony of how God touched you through being involved in a ministry. Our intent is to emphasize individuals – how God has provided for his people by name (though I can keep these anonymous if preferred). If you can help by writing a brief testimony, email me yours by next Tuesday, February 2.

Devotional Reading

Someone emailed me asking for suggestions for devotional reading (15 minutes a day). Here is what I shared with him. It is not an exhaustive list, but books that immediately came to mind.
  • John Piper has a number of books which would be good. As we near lent season, you might consider 50 Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die.
  • C. S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters is excellent and convicting.
  • A. W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God, is a classic.
  • You might also consider J. C. Ryle, Holiness.
  • Jerry Bridges, The Disciplines of Grace.
  • James Boice, The Parables of Jesus and Christ's Call to Discipleship.
  • He and Phil published The Heart of the Gospel, a collection of messages they gave years ago for lent observance.

Know Where Your Money is Going in Haiti?

Many people are responding to the need in Haiti. The news today is of people being encouraged to move to the countryside in search of resources. Like to know your gifts are being used well?

This Friday, students of Curtis Institute have joined together to present a wonderful benefit concert for those in Haiti. Jeb and Gail Bland, former members of Tenth are returning to Haiti in three weeks to visit and bring relief monies in person to our Christian brothers and sisters reaching out to those in need with the Gospel and resources. Joining with the gift of others, we hope to meet and surpass the $10,000 matching grant the Blands have been offered. (Should you wish to contribute but cannot make the concert -- write out and send your checks to the church, noting "For Haiti" on the memo line. And thanks!)

So come join us for a wonderful evening of music and joy in the Lord as we stand with the people of Haiti in their time of need.
