Housing need in August

Sharon Golding is looking for someone who is willing to host a 60 year old French woman from August 2nd-25th. She is the chaperone for a group of French students who will be visiting Philadelphia. Sharon is the local coordinator for the group, and they will not be able to come unless the chaperone has a place to stay. Please contact Sharon if you or anyone you know might be interested. She can be reached at sharonbgolding@yahoo.com or 610.639.0260.

Ride needed

One of our missionary teens is in need of a ride up to the Poconos, either Wednesday night, July 26 or during the day on Thursday, July 27. She will be flying into Philadelphia after a visit with family. Contact Christiana at the Missions Office or via email at cfitzpatrick at tenth.org if you are interested in helping out.

from the Gulf Coast

Marty and Marlene, the couple whose home our teams have worked to rebuild over the past few months, are excited that their house will be finished soon. They told Sue Hoyt that they recently got electricity, that the baseboards are being painted, and that the air conditioning man is coming soon! They also recently hosted a seafood and pasta dinner for 90 people from the church and work teams, further demonstrating their bond with the church in Biloxi. Continue to pray for them as Marty is now back at work and Marlene is returning soon. Praise God for this ongoing relationship!

Biking

I biked into work for the first time this morning. Ginger rode with me along the river trail up to Locust Street. We had just purchased a folding bike for her on Wednesday. We are now the biking couple!

Sermon Sunday

Sunday I will preaching Proverbs 5 on "Sex and Discretion." This is in response to the spiritual health survey which indicated pornography as a fairly common temptation. Harvest USA will have a booth set up in Fellowship Hall for information, and I should have other info posted next week for help. Pray for me as I prepare the message on a sensitive subject, that I might use proper discretion in my words and yet also be clear.

Oh, and no, John Ferguson and I did not collaborate on sermon titles (Prayer for Purity)!

Housing Wanted

I am a 25 year old single guy who is planning to attend Widener University beginning in September for my Doctorate of Physical Therapy. I am looking for housing somewhere near the school, most preferrably in the Woodlyn, Ridley Park, Prospect Park, Brookhaven area. I would love to share an apartment w/ another Christian guy if possible. Secondly, if a family had a room to rent out somewhere near this area, I would be open to that as well. It would be nice if I had access to a kitchen. I have a car so I would not need access to public transportation. Price is negotiatable. Thank you for posting this. I can be contacted via E-mail at fritler@yahoo.com or on my cell phone at 570-419-6850.

Volunteers Needed

From Bruce Finn and Donna Hoult:

We need your help especially in the area of Registration help! Notice you get to attend some of the training sessions for free if you volunteer. We are co-hosting the North American Church Planting Seminar here in the Philly area July 24-28. We lobbied hard to get Global Church Advancement (GCA) to bring the Seminar here, and we’ve been working with them to prepare an outstanding, catalytic church planting event. We’re praying that this will serve to advance the transformational church planting movement that God has begun in the greater Philly area.

In order to provide the Seminar at the prices they do, GCA depends upon volunteers to join with them in putting on the event. Most of the roles they must fill can be carried out by anyone who is warm, flexible, diligent and available … no special skills required. Here is a brief summary of the roles/responsibilities that we’d like for you to consider filling, either yourself, or by recruiting someone you know who would delight in serving with us in this strategic church planting event. We need several people in each role:

Training Room Host/Hostess – help the trainer set up, record session, obtain evaluation forms, get GCA staff involved to solve any problems that arise
- need minimum ½ day commitments (morning, afternoon or evening slots)
- need coverage all 5 days – MO-FR, but you can commit to as little as ½ day
- you get to participate free in the training taking place in the room you host

Registration Host/Hostess – greet students and trainers, register them, answer questions
- Monday, 8:30am – 1:00pm (four or five volunteers needed)
- Tuesday-Friday, 8:30am - 10:30am (one volunteer needed for each day)
- attend any two training sessions free

Set-up / Break-down – help GCA staff set up chairs, tables, A/V equipment, cables, etc. on Sunday night, and reverse this on Friday afternoon
- you can commit to either one or both dates (Sunday evening, Friday afternoon)
- no special skills required
- attend any two training sessions free for each time-slot you serve

Audio Engineer – assist GCA engineer, relieve GCA engineer on sound board, etc.
- need minimum ½ day commitments (morning, afternoon or evening slots)
- experience with A/V systems required
- you get to participate free in the plenary training sessions in which you serve

Van driver – pick up attendees at hotel in King of Prussia, deliver to National Christian Conference Center in Valley Forge
- need Sunday night July 23 and Monday morning July 24
- you can commit to one or both days
- attend any two training sessions free for each time slot you serve

To volunteer, simply click here, and on the registration page indicate “GCA Volunteer” as your “registration type”. Then complete the registration process that it will present to you. It will enable you to sign up for individual roles and for specific days/times. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to call or e-mail me Bruce Finn or e-mail GCA directly at cindy@gca.cc.

CCA-SHCA Talks

Pray for City Center Academy and Spruce Hill Christian School. Tonight, committees from the two boards hold the first of several meetings to explore possible merging. We will be giving presentations of our schools. The meetings will be facilitated by David Greenhalgh, Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences and Professor of Education at Eastern University.

Sunday's Tenth Press article will give a report of CCA's progress in meeting the guidelines set up by the church's agreement in granting funds. George McFarland, the board chairman, will also speak at Living Church.

Boiled Peanuts...Yum!

So what is it with you northerners about boiled peanuts? I merely mention this delectable delicacy and people gag at the thought. How can anyone not love their taste?

Prayer Request

Dear Praying Friends,

On June 26, due to a workforce reduction, I lost my job at Unisys. I had been with the company 8 years, writing, producing, and directing videos and multimedia projects for the sales and marketing division. I left on good terms with a large body of work. I’d value everyone’s prayers as I seek God’s provision and direction for the future. Some of you may know that I was the director of Tenth’s 175th anniversary video, "This People, This Place," as well as "In My Father’s House," a video about our church’s orphan work in Liberia. As a result of these and other Christian projects I’ve made over the years, I am praying about and exploring the possibility of producing videos that help to multiply gospel ministry. Whether that is a full time or freelance situation depends on how God leads. Thank you for your prayers as Margaret and I wait on the Lord (Isaiah 64:3,4).

And please pray for the new strategic vision video I'm producing for the church, especially for the people we'll be interviewing, starting with Dr. Ryken tomorrow, July 11 at 3PM.

Sincerely in Christ,
Craig Claudin

Housing Needed

I am 21 years old and will be a graduate student at Chestnut Hill College in the fall. I need to find an apartment and am also looking for roommates. If you need any more information, you can contact me at jaskvarka@gmail.com or (570) 547-2235. Thank you so much for your help. Jackie Skvarka

Free Piano

Trey and Becky Holloway have a piano to give away for free. The person who takes it would assume responsibility for removing it from their home in Pitman, NJ on the second story of a duplex. The piano is in good condition. It's a Lester Philadelphia about 40 or 50 years old. The A string broke a few years back and was restrung, but will need to be tuned up again as it is a new string. Any interested parties can contact them by phone at 856-218-8844 or email at hollowayb@lightspring.com. They move next month, so a quick response is needed.
