Book Collecting

We want to build a collection of books by Tenth ministers for our archives. Presently we are working on Dr. Boice's collection. I suppose we could purchase copies, but we would like first to see what may be out there among the Tenth members and friends to contribute. If you have copies you are willing to donate, dash me (mclark@tenth.org) or Dot Boersma (dboersma@tenth.org) a note. Click here to see the list and what we need.

No Training Tonight

My interview with Carroll tonight, alas, is being postponed. Workers are installing the organ cabinet and speakers into the evening. I'll let you know when the next talk is scheduled.

All hands on deck!

The front "deck" of Grace House, that is! This Saturday, from 9 am until mid-afternoon, all Tenth members and attenders who can wield a paintbrush or sand a plank are invited to the Grace House in Upper Darby. Many hands will make light work of sanding and varnishing the front porch and other light maintenance tasks.

The Grace House is easily accessible from 69th Street Station. Lunch will be provided. To sign up, email me, lmosebrook@tenth.org.

With the Lord

Tenth member, Reginald Hayes, died Monday and is now with his Lord in glory. Reggie joined the church two years ago and lived in Bear, DE. His widow, Gwen, may be sent cards at 53 Grand Teton Drive, Bear, DE 19701.

Funeral services will be held this Saturday, August 30, 12:00 at Consolation Baptist Church. There will be a viewing from 10-12:00. Consolation Baptist is at 2500 Wharton Street in South Philadelphia.

Moving and painting help needed

A woman new to Tenth is just moving to Philadelphia/Center City and looking for two or three strong guys to help move furniture and also paint; willing to pay. Move-in date is September 3 at 10:30 A.M. Contact her.

Deaconesses Discussed

byFaith magazine has printed two articles on the subject of deaconesses by Tim Keller and Ligon Duncan.

Are Presbyterians Catholic?

A question was asked about why we use the term "catholic" in the Apostles Creed line: "I believe in the holy catholic church."

The term "catholic" means broad or universal. Here is the definition given from the Random House dictionary:

1. broad or wide-ranging in tastes, interests, or the like; having sympathies with all; broad-minded; liberal.
2. universal in extent; involving all; of interest to all.
3. pertaining to the whole Christian body or church.

Thus, to believe in the holy catholic church is to acknowledge the universal church made up of all true believers in Christ.

Wynne Interview

For my elder training session on Hospital Visitation Thursday night, I am bringing in the pastor who is a legend-in-his-own-time for making such visits. I will be interviewing Carroll Wynne. I don't know how many times in conversation with Tenth members about their hospital experiences, they make the statement, "And then Carroll came..." followed by an account of what he did for them.

You may listen in by going to the webcast on Tenth's website (tenth.org) at 8:00 pm Thursday night.

Nursery workers, pick up fall schedules

Nursery workers, pick up fall schedules at the nursery desk if you have not already done so.

Ordination, Moving, Having a Baby

He made it thr0ugh his written examinations. He passed his oral examinations before committee. Now, he has one more examination to pass, this time on the floor of presbytery. Trusting that he will lead the final hurdle presbytery's September 12 meeting, we are planning an ordination service for Chris Seah at the September 28 evening worship. Afterwards, he and Robin will move to Singapore to begin a pastorate there at Providence Church. Oh...and in one week Robin is due to deliver their first baby!

Day of Prayer

This Sunday we observe our quarterly Day of Prayer. Pray-ers will meet in Fellowship Hall during the 9:00 hour and in the first floor rear room in the 315 Building. Jonathan Olsen will lead the 9:00 time, and I will lead the 11:00 portion.

Jonathan has already demonstrated his ability to get prayer results. Yesterday, he prayed for the Phillies to overcome a 7-0 deficit against the Mets...

Organ Progress

You should notice progress this Sunday being made in the choir loft. The casement for the speakers are going up. Work seems to be progressing on time. Check the Capital Campaign blog for pictures of the old organ and its removal. The link is on the right hand column.

Body Image Seminar

Body Image: ONE DAY SEMINAR ONLY - taught by Julie Smith Lowe

Date: Saturday, September 20, 2008
Venue: Rust Auditorium at Westminster Theological Seminary, Glenside
Time: 9:00 am - 4:30 pm (lunch on your own)
Cost: $99

Everyone is bombarded with the message that physical beauty is paramount. The price for flawlessness is often steep - eating disorders, body dysmorphia, self-hatred, and the like. Learn how to stop listening to other voices and turn instead to our Creator to define your value and identity. This seminar is designed for parents, youth workers, pastors, teachers and anyone in a professional field working with young people who may encounter these issues. Please note that this seminar is for people 18 years of age and older.

Babysitter Needed

Steve and Tina Masters are looking for someone to babysit mid-afternoon through (potentially) early evening in Ardmore on Tues/Wed/Thurs during the school year. There would be a lot of scheduling flexibility available. The individual needs to be able to drive. Anyone who's interested in more information may call Tina at 215-620-7013.

Of Blank Screens

Construction is such fun. If any of you tried to view the service in any of the overflow rooms yesterday, you found only blank screens. Evidently, in the midst of the deconstruction phase of construction, some cable got cut/disconnected/axed. We trust we will have the problem remedied by next Sunday. Ah...there's nothing new under the sun.

Lavatory News

Well, we made it through the first Sunday with Porta-potty Alley. I don't know if any women tried their two luxury boxes next to the nursery. Someone asked how often our covenience boxes will be emptied. My understanding is every Monday. The Catacombs bathroom project is likely to take two months. Hey, be glad the work is not being done in the middle of winter.
