Congregational Meeting

A meeting of the Congregation of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia is called for Sunday, April 25, 2010, to approve the motion from the Session to erect a Pastoral Selection Committee and to dissolve pastoral relations with Dr. Philip G. Ryken. The meeting will be held in the Sanctuary at 12:30 pm.

By order of the Session,
George K. McFarland, Clerk

This is a sobering announcement. Actually I was not accurate with the wording. In order for a minister to leave his congregation, he must receive approval from his presbytery, in this case Philadelphia Presbytery. So, at the last presbytery meeting in March, Phil "tendered the resignation of his pastoral charge to his Presbytery." Presbytery, then, "shall cite the church to appear by its commissioners, to show cause why the Presbytery should or should not accept the resignation." Thus, we are required to have "a meeting of the congregation called and conducted in the same manner as the call of the pastor."  What we will be voting on is to communicate to presbytery that we consent to Phil's resignation (not that we want it to happen). Presbytery will then act officially to dissolve the relationship.

Pray for Turkey

from www.prayforTurkey.com

To Church Leaders and Christians Worldwide,

From the body of Christ in Turkey, to our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world, grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Greetings from the church in Turkey – from the land of Noah, of Abraham, of Paul, of Ararat and Harran, of Antioch, Ephesus, Galatia, of the Seven Churches of Revelation……… Yet today, the body of Christians in our land is less than 0.1% of the population of 72 million.

We are writing to you on behalf of the leaders of the church in Turkey to ask for your churches. We greatly desire that you would join the small congregations of Turkey along with many churches worldwide to give 2-3 minutes to prayer for Turkey in your churches on Sunday April 18, 2010.

Foster Home for Dogs Needed

JD Little is looking for a foster home for his sister’s two dogs for 3 to 6 months. Maggie is the 11-year old female American Bulldog. She very sweet and healthy (for her age) with a low-key personality. She has been spayed and weighs about 80 pounds. She has some arthritis in her back legs, but she takes her meds easily. Sam is the 9-year old male mixture of collie, husky and who-knows what (on the left). He's affectionate and very smart. He is neutered and about 40 pounds. He is in perfect health. They just visited the vet and are up-to-date on all vaccinations. Flea/tick/heartworm meds will be provided for them as will any needed food or vet service. There is a crate for them that holds both dogs. They would prefer a fenced yard -- they love to be outside. They are housebroken and good with other dogs and kids of all ages. If you can help, email JD.

Delaware County Christian School Concert Choir

DC's Concert Choir and Knight Tones, under the direction of Mrs. Renee Bussey, completed a four-day tour through Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.

On Wednesday, May 26 the trip got underway with the first stop at Garden Spot Retirement Village in New Holland, PA. Prior to the performance, small groups of students visited and sang in rooms of those in nursing care and assisted living who would be unable to attend the concert.

From PA the choir traveled to Maryland and Virginia performing for and worshipping with three Christian schools: Chapelgate Christian Academy (Marriottsville, MD), Trinity Christian School (Fairfax, VA), and Greenbriar Christian School (Chesapeake, VA).

The tour wrapped up at a music festival in Williamburg, VA. where the Choir and Knight Tones presented a variety of musical styles ranging from classical, gospel, and choreographed show stoppers. Both the Concert Choir and Knight Tones earned 1st place at the festival.

The Shepherd Leader

Tim Witmer, Senior Pastor at Crossroads Community Church in Upper Darby, Professor Practical Theology at Westminster, founder of The Shepherds' Institute, but most importantly tuba player for the Westminster Brass, has published a book that is the summit of years of study and teaching about the role of elders in the church. The Shepherd Leader: Achieving Effective Shepherding in Your Church can be bought at Westminster Bookstore. I read the original manuscript and will be making in required reading for all our elders at Tenth. (So, elders, you may as well make your purchase now.)

PCRT Volunteering

A few volunteers are still needed to help with registration, the booktable, hospitality, and childcare for PCRT on April 30 and May 1. Please contact Anne Davies (x243) if you are interested in helping. Volunteers who work at least four hours will receive complimentary overflow registration and a set of conference CDs.

Volunteers are especially needed to help with childcare (Friday evening and Saturday) and with clean-up/Sunday setup at the end of the day on Saturday, usually beginning around 10pm.

What Did You Expect?

Paul Tripp's latest book is coming out - What Did you Expect?? Redeeming the Realities of Marriage. Click here for Westminster's special 60%-off offer. But I don't know after reading the Preface. (I was given an autographed copied!) The first sentence reads: "For some reason I seem to be drawn to write about things I'm not very good at." Hhmm...that does not inspire confidence in me. On the other hand, I did attend his seminar on the same topic and found that if he's not very good at marriage, it is not because he doesn't have keen insight. Paul has a knack for getting to the deeper issues of most any subject matter, and the subject of marriage is no different. He is also very readable and entertaining. Get a copy and expect to be enlightened, convicted, and encouraged by the application of grace.

Wheelchair Needed

If you have a wheelchair to spare for four weeks, a Tenth elder is in need of one. Contact Wasyl Semkiw at 215.334.0730.
