Enhanced Enforcement of Traffic Laws

Beginning  June 3, the Philadelphia Police Dept. will be committing police officers on foot and on bike to educate and enforce traffic laws in Center City. This is the latest effort from the City's "Give Respect, Get Respect" campaign, which began in the summer of 2011, when the City distributed 3 different educational brochures separately addressing the rights and responsibilities of all street users (i.e.,  motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians), and the police conducted approximately 1,600 stops.

Best Laid Plans

Proverbs 16:1

The plans of the heart belong to man,
but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.

The mystery of how this truth takes place is deep, beyond our understanding. Our question is not how this can be, but why we are being told. What message is God conveying to us?

Fear and Humility

Proverbs 15:33

The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
and humility comes before honor.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge" (1:7). Listening to and reading the words of wise men and women will make you wiser. The keener you observe and learn from the experts in their fields, the more you will grown in knowledge and the more skillful you will become. But until you understand what it is to fear the Lord, you will never achieve true wisdom. Without fear of the Lord, you will never know true humility; and without fear and humility you will never know what it is to be honored by the Lord.

Closing Book Sale

Sometime this summer the church bookstore will close down. The original purpose of the store - to provide access to sound Christian and Reformed books that were not easily accessible - is no longer the need it once was with the accessibility of the internet. The church library will expand into the presence space, providing more resources and still allowing browsers the opportunity to view books they may want to buy.

Anyhow, this is a long way of saying that the bookstore has books on sale. It is open following each worship service.

Despising Oneself

Proverbs 15:32

Whoever ignores instruction despises himself,
but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.

This proverb states what every teacher has said sometime to his students, "If you don't study/if you cheat, you are only hurting yourself." The fool thinks he is cleverly getting away with something by "outfoxing" the teacher or the system, not realizing that he is only keeping himself ignorant and, indeed, is falling behind others who are gaining knowledge. He also is losing out on sharpening his ability to listen well and to think clearly. In short, he is acting like a person who despises himself, who is keeping himself from advancing.

Looking for a Roommate

Hello, I am Jennifer. I am 31 years old, counselor/therapist by trade in the city and I am looking for Christian roommates to share a house and part of life with in the city. I currently attend Liberti Fairmount church and have been a Christian for about three years. Sharing and building each other’s faith is important to me in a living situation, as well as being there for each other. I have lived in Philadelphia for about 8 years in different parts of the city and am open to where I move, although my preference is CC/S. Philadelphia.

Listening Ear

Proverbs 15:31

The ear that listens to life-giving reproof
will dwell among the wise.

Here is the key to wisdom - simple as most deep truths are. One grows in wisdom as one is able to listen well and heed correction. All scientists know that the road to knowledge is paved with mistakes and then learning from those mistakes. So it is with wisdom. We are all born sinful; all born ignorant; what distinguishes the person who grows in wisdom from the one who grows in folly is this disposition to hearing and valuing reproof.
