Temper, Temper

Proverbs 14:17

A man of quick temper acts foolishly,
and a man of evil devices is hated.


This proverb points out the danger that comes with anger: we make fools of ourselves. More times than not, we regret our words spoken and actions committed in anger. We harm people we love; we lose or destroy possessions valuable to us. Anger makes us dumb. All the more trouble then for a quick tempered person.

Reckless Living

Proverbs 14:16

One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil,
but a fool is reckless and careless.

Our culture today, at least our popular media culture, disdains such a proverb. It celebrates those daring to live on the edge because the one virtue that truly matters is passion. It makes no difference what one is passionate about. One person is passionate about serving the poor; another is passionate is about skateboarding. Each activity has the same value as long as the activity produces a rush.

The Simple and the Prudent

Proverbs 14:15

The simple believes everything,
but the prudent gives thought to his steps.

The simple believes the advertisements that happiness, sex appeal, and popularity are found in merchandise, especially expensive merchandise. The simple buys into the messages of pop music and media, because they are expressed with passion. The simple believes whatever appeals to his senses and promises him happiness without change or cost. He believes everything, not because he is intellectually incapable of sifting for the truth, but because he is most affected by flattery. As long as someone appeals to him in a flattering manner, he will believe the message, provided that the message also is flattering to him.

Stationary Bike

Do you have a stationary bike gathering dust and cobwebs in your basement or garage? Proverbs 14:14

The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways,
and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways.

Once, I commented on the poor luck a certain fellow seemed to keep having. My companion replied that sometimes a person makes his own luck. He could have quoted this proverb. We often question why we are having so much trouble. It is true that trouble comes to the godly as well as the ungodly and that often there is no accounting for troubles. But much, if not most, of our troubles come as consequence to our behavior.

Virginia Alice Hill

Please pray for Fred Hill whose mother died this morning. Virginia Alice Hill lived a long life (90 years) knowing her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She is survived by Fred, his brother Mervin and his sister Beverly. She had 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Internment will be at a yet-to-be determined date in Glen Aubrey, NY adjacent to husband Ralph who predeceased her by 20 years.

Honoring Volunteers

This morning the staff is hosting a breakfast in honor of the volunteers who have been coming into the church offices over the past year to help in a variety of ways - mailings, reception desk, and other clerical duties. The pastoral staff cannot accomplish what is required of them without the aid of the support staff, and the support staff cannot accomplish their responsibilities without the aid of volunteers. We even needed a volunteer to come in and man the desk so that we can honor the volunteers!

Welcome, Caroline Margaret!

Steven and Karen Lengkeek are pleased to announce the birth of Caroline Margaret Lengkeek on Friday, March 1, at 12:42 pm. Caroline weighed 8.2 pounds and 20 1/2 inches long. Christian, Emma, Elise and John are excited about the new addition to the family.

Endless Joy

Proverbs 14:13

Even in laughter the heart may ache,
and the end of joy may be grief.

Not all is what it seems. That neighbor who is laughing may be experiencing immense anguish. That couple who seem so happy may be filled with sadness. The news of joy may be setting in motion great grief. This is the character of life in this world - that joy is either mixed with sorrow or but an interlude between times of grief and anxiety. The story of the world is the story of Camelot. No matter how good a place and time may be, seeds of sorrow are always sown and bear fruit. Such is the story of every individual.
