Glocal [gloh-cuhl]: adjective

Friday's word of the day: glocal.

Coined by Bob Roberts, glocal describes a local church with a global vision. Christianity Today recently featured an interesting interview with Roberts that can be accessed here: http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2007/july/30.42.html

Check out the Global Outreach blog, http://multiplyingministry.blogspot.com/ for more information as well as prayer requests, short-term trip memories and photos, and miscelaneous musings.

Meet Jonny McGreevy

Jonny McGreevy hails from Northern Ireland and just completed leading Maranatha summer projects that involved taking a team to Northern Ireland and hosting a team from there as well. Even so, Jonny's internship responsibility is with Tenth International Fellowship, where he shares preaching duties and leads a small group. He has one more year at Westminster and intends to go into the pastoral ministry. Jonny's wife Laura teaches at Spruce Hill Christian School. They moved just yesterday into the Fairmount area.

Back in the Pulpit Again

Phil is back in the pulpit again taking us back to Solomon (1 Kings 4:25-34). Bruce McDowell moves us into the New Testament with the stewardship series. He will be focusing on Matthew 23:23-24.

Meet Andrew Duncan

Andrew Duncan begins an internship in September. In partnership with City Center Academy, his primary responsibility will be to serve as student chaplain. He will be responsible for the school assemblies, but his most important work will be to come alongside students individually as a friend and spiritual mentor. Andrew and his wife Chie were married this past December. A student at Westminster, his intent is to move to his wife's country of Japan and serve in a supporting capacity Nagoya Theological Seminary. Andrew and Chie live in West Philadelphia.

ACTS Profile

Profiles of churches serving their unique communities have been posted in a new "Congregations" section of the Fasten Web site. One of those profiles is about Tenth Presbyterian and ACTS.

Meet Melissa Clemens

Melissa Clemens begins a staff internship this September. She is a native of the Jacksonville, FL, and more importantly, can claim to have lived in South Carolina during college (Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC). It was in college that she understood what is was to be regarded as a sinner in need of grace. Melissa is a Westminster student and plans to graduate next May with a M.A. in Biblical Counseling. Her assignment at Tenth will be to help develop the Tenth Community Assistant network in CCC and Parish 1. She also lives in the SOSS neighborhood as a boarder (or extended family member) in the Olsen home.

Always a Critic

(See below. There's always a couple critics.)

Has our Executive Minister, after having in the past used his blogsite for the laudable purpose of promoting correct English usage, really joined the ranks of those who believe "couple" is an adjective??? (See the reference to "a couple more courses" in the "Meet Nick Batzog"
post.) Ah, well, at least I can take solace in knowing that this usage is still condemned by 3/4 of the American Heritage Dictionary's panel!

Baby Shower

Millie Stockdale is having a baby shower for one of her ESL students who is expecting twin boys soon. If you have baby items (especially a new-born car seat-- to borrow or buy) that could be contributed, give her a call at 610-642-0310.

Meet Nick Batzig

Nick Batzig will be serving an internship under David Apple with ACTS. Nick and his family moved to Philadelphia last week from Greenville, SC where he was attending Greenville Theological Seminary. He still has a couple more courses to take, but can do so while here. Nick actually was raised in the Philadelphia area until he turned twelve. Though raised by Christian parents, he strayed from the faith and followed a "Jonathan Olsen" type life (wild). Since coming back to faith, he developed a love for ministering to the outcasts of society and also to the elderly. He and his wife Anna have one baby son, Micah. They have moved into the SOSS (South of South Street) area that so many Tenth young adults are flocking to.

Live-in Opportunity Sought

Latin private tutor with a degree from Westminster is looking for a live-in companion opportunity, for example, with an elderly, godly lady who needs someone in her home to take care of the cooking, run errands, do grocery shopping, and provide other like services in exchange for room and board. If you know of an opportunity please contact 215-643-2596 or BernardAnnetteA@cs.com.

The Gospel Coalition

Phil distributed a document for the pastoral staff to read from the "Gospel Coalition." You can read the same material at www.thegospelcoalition.org. You can also hear a workshop he gave on "Union with Christ and Justification."

Phil's Back

Phil is back in town. I won't mention what I said about his preaching if you don't. We can keep that our little secret.

John's Catch

Paul Jones is not the only fisherman in Canada. John Voorhis catches his share.
