Messner vs Smith

I see in the post below that CLF is trying to woo our worshippers away with the enticement that Kevin Smith is preaching there this Sunday. Well, we're bringing in Aaron Messner! And you get to see the newest Messner, Titus, born this past summer.

Kevin Smith at CLF

Rev. Kevin Smith will be preaching this Sunday at Christ Liberation Fellowship. CLF is located at 65th and Lansdowne Ave.

Welcome, Chloe!

Moses and Eunice Wong are pleased to announce the birth of Chloe on January 30.

Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith is attending this week's Workshop on Biblical Exposition. He now has a church in Miami. Fortune smiled upon him this week, letting him not only experience snow but get to shovel it off his mother's driveway.

Series Ends

Sunday evening, Paul Tripp concludes the sermon series on David. The next series will dip into 1 Corinthians.

Persecuted Church Prayer

I see that Phil will be sharing prayer requests for China at this Sunday's Prayer for the Persecuted Church. The group meets 4-5:15 pm in the toddler area off Reception Hall.

WBE Still On

If any WBE participants are wondering if the conference is still on schedule, the answer is yes. A little snow can't stop us! Come when you can, though, if traveling is difficult.

WBE

Marion,

If you have time, could you write a blog about the WBE this week – what it is, and encouraging people to pray?

Phil

Sure thing! I googled WBE and came up with the following:
Women's Business Enterprise
World Boxing Empire
World Business Exchange
Warner Bros. Entertainment
Wet Behind the Ear
Wavelength Bypass Edge

None of these seem quite right, although Wet Behind the Ear may come the closest. Our WBE is Workshop on Biblical Exposition. We have about 40 ministers coming in to receive ongoing training in expository preaching. Along with hearing presentations on how to do expository preaching, they gather in small groups to present sermon outlines and receive critique. Yes, it starts off a little scary, but before long the small group sessions become the more fun exercises. Why? Because the participants get caught up in the study of Scripture.

The secret behind the preaching conference is that it is really a Bible study conference. The premise is that the best preaching comes from the best study of Scripture. If you get the point of the biblical passage right, you are most likely to come up with the best sermon.

Aaron Messner will be one of the speakers, by the way, and one of the small group leaders. And he brought his family with him.

If you want more information about WBE, go to the Simeon Trust website which puts on the workshops.

The Asian American Women's Coalition (AAWX) is excited and pleased to announce the availability of a nursing scholarship being offered by the Methodist Hospital Foundation of Methodist Hospital, a Division of Thomas Jefferson Univ Hospital. Students may be admitted to an accredited ASN nursing program at a school of their choice. The value of the nursing scholarships is $30,000,000 over a two year period. Recipients of the nursing scholarship will be asked to make a 3-year commitment to work at Methodist Hospital, a community hospital dedicated to serving the healthcare needs in South Philadelphia, and thus, a successful scholarship recipient and graduate of the program is promised immediate employment upon passing their Nursing Board Exam.

AACW is delighted to collaborate with Methodist Hospital Foundation, in providing this opportunity and information to you. The application process for the nursing scholarship is a completely seperate process from the Asian American Women's Coalition-Cecelia Moy Yep Scholarship.

Scholarship applicants must be submitted by March 27, 2009. Applicants must be of Asian descent. Email Diane.Pirollo@jeffersonhospital.org to request an application.

Mr. Baseball Hill

So, I'm in a room with Phil, Jonathan, and Fred Hill. I ask the "baseball experts" Phil and Jonathan, "What pitcher holds the record for most career victories after age 40?" Fred knew the answer immediately. Let's just say Phil and Jonathan would have needed a lifeline to stay in the game.

Sermon Quotes

Phil sent me his source for his sermon quotes from Helmuth von Moltke:

Michael A. G. and Victoria Haykin, The Christian Lover: The Sweetness of Love and Marriage in the Letters of Believers (Lake Mary, FL: Reformation Trust, 2009)

Evening Gift

Shameless! The evening service leaders are shameless! They are giving out a gift to whoever attends worship next Sunday evening. From what was held up yesterday, it appears to be a book, but was I allowed to see it? Nooooo...I have to wait like everyone else.
