New Lent Series

Last year we encouraged small groups to study a common theme during the Lent season. We used James Boice's book The Christ of the Empty Tomb and provided discussion questions each week. This year I have developed a series of eight studies entitled The Death of Jesus: Who Is Responsible? We know already the answer - we are. But we will study the cast of the "usual suspects" with the intent to consider which of their motivations and character traits can be found in us.

Small group leaders are letting me know now if their groups will be using the booklets that we are publishing. If you are not in a group and would like your own copy, we will be making them available the Sundays of February 5 and 12. We are charging just $1 per copy for church members to help offset printing costs.

Join us this Sunday for our services.

You may have noticed that since the first of the year postludes for regular services have been shortened considerably. This initiative from the Music Committee/Music Director was brought to Session and approved as a means of encouraging fellowship after worship. On selected Sundays (Easter, Reformation Day, PCRT, Christmas, etc.) the postlude will be enhanced and the congregation can enjoy a musical conclusion to worship.

Sunday Sermon Title

I get a bit nervous when the Senior Minister declares on the church's sign, "Vengeance is Mine!"

Taking Sabbatical

Below is the Tenth Press article from last Sunday about my sabbatical. At the end of the article in the bulletin version an "editor" who will go unnamed added: "Editor's note: The Tenth staff does not approve of this sabbatical." Some of you have wondered if this was to be taken seriously. No, no. My staff is very happy for me and supportive. They think...wait a second...what's that sound outside my door? Are they setting up tents?!

Urban Ministry Conference

Tenth's annual Urban Ministry Conference is Saturday, March 3. Workshops by urban ministry partners will explore how the Church represents the hands of Jesus to a suffering world. They will challenge us, also, to “unwrap the grave cloths” of those left for dead, and to care for the broken and weak, the vulnerable and unwanted. Click here for full details.

Brass Tactics

Does the Westminster Brass know that its trombonist is flirting with other brass groups? Tom Elliott is performing with the PBU Brass Quintet this coming Friday, January 20, 8:00pm at the William F. Chatlos Chapel on the PBU campus. And he has included another Westminster regular, Brian Brown, who plays tuba. Should someone be notifying Jim Hala?

The Lord's Provision

Accounting for all income and expenses is still taking place, but we can safely announce that overall income will cover expenses. A complete report will be given in March at Vision Night, March 17. Meanwhile, let us give thanks to the Lord who provides. With two weeks remaining in the year, we were going to end in the red if the giving had not increased as it did.
