Here is an interesting survey done by the Pew Foundation on our culture's view of marriage. You probably can predict the direction of the trends.
One in Christ
Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others (Romans 12:4-5).
In his study of this passage in his volumes on Romans, Donald Grey Barnhouse tells how he once made slighting remarks about a denomination he considered to be on the fringe of genuine Christianity. A minister from this denomination was present and afterwards told Barnhouse how grieved he was at what he considered an unjust judgment. Barnhouse apologized, and it was agreed that he would meet for lunch with four or five ministers from this particular church.

Marathon Obstacles
The Philadelphia Marathon is this Sunday, November 21. Many of you, such as myself, will need to plan your route into church. Here is a link for the route of the marathon which runs from the Ben Franklin Parkway to Columbus Blvd as far down as Washington Ave back to Chestnut Street to 34th Street up to Fairmount Park. Thankfully, the South Street Bridge is back in operation as the bridges for Chestnut and Market are likely not useable.

Do Not Be Alarmed!
Jim Boice quoted and told Barnhouse hundreds of times. Here is a powerful, moving story involving Barnhouse at the start of WWII.
In the summer of 1939, Donald Grey Barnhouse was in Scotland, where he had been preaching. His family had been staying at a small resort on the coast of Normandy in France. He was to be in Belfast, Ireland, the first week in September for meetings, but because he had a free week between the close of the meetings in Scotland and the beginning of the meetings in Ireland, he decided to join his family in France during the interval.

Barnhouse Blessing
It might be an understatement to say that James Montgomery Boice was influenced by Donal Grey Barnhouse. When I type in "Barnhouse" in the search mode for Boice's works, the name comes up 691 times. Maybe it is the result of Barnhouse saying a blessing over him as a toddler. Here is the story from Tenth's history:
It was at Tenth Church that a special meeting with Dr. Barnhouse took place. "It was about Christmas time," remembers Jean, "and Newt left me and Jimmy out at the door." Once inside, Jean and young Jim were met by Dr. Barnhouse, always an imposing figure. "What, may I ask, are you doing here tonight?" he asked. jean responded, "Isn't this the night for the Christmas party?" "No, it's next Sunday - you come back next Sunday." Then, Jean remembers, "he picked Jim up, put his hand on his head, and prayed silently. I didn't hear the prayer, but I always felt that the Lord used that prayer in a special way in Jim's life."

Blessings of Sparrows
Sue Neely emailed me this encouraging news.
"I am volunteering at Alpha Pregnancy Services. Today Amy Voorhis brought in some wonderful baby blankets that the girls at Sparrows made in October. They are much appreciated. It is a joy to see small hands being useful for the Lord!"
50th Anniversary
This coming Sunday we will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Donald Grey Barnhouse's death. Former Tenth pastor Rick Phillips will preach, "Dr. Barnhouse's Text," which is Isaiah 55:10-11. Rick is Senior Minister of Second Presbyterian Church in Greenville, S.C.
