Isaiah's Story

(Part 5 of 5 advent stories)

Isaiah's Story

the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully…(1 Peter 1:10).
That’s an understatement! You can be sure I searched intently for understanding of the very prophecy I was given to write. A child called Immanuel born of a virgin? I was angry with Ahaz when I made that prophecy. People say strange things when they are upset. Was that from me or God?

Christmas dinner for internationals

If you are an international and need a place to go for Christmas dinner this Sunday, please email skim(at)tenth.org.  There is room for a few more with a family from Tenth.

Have Yourself a Blessed Christmas

Thanks to Lois Denier for sending this link to me. Joni sings new lyrics that the composer of "Have Yourself a Merry Christmas" rewrote after he came to Christ. She sings, accompanied by the composer Hugh Martin.

ESL Teachers needed at Northeast Community Church

Greetings!

The ESL Ministry at Northeast Community Church may be young, but it is vibrant!  We have had almost 150 adult students from 16 different countries attending our classes, and about 40 of their children coming for homework help!  We currently have a Wait List of approx 40 new students wanting to get into our classes.  Moreover, we had a huge Thanksgiving celebration dinner and program with about 160 in attendance, and a team skit about God providing for the Pilgrims coming to America.  Then, this Sunday we had our first Christmas field trip, with 60 going to a Living Nativity at a church in NJ.

The Shepherd's Story

(Part 4 of 5)

The Shepherd's Story

I have never been so scared in my life. And I have had reasons to be frightened in my profession. What, with long hours in the wilderness night protecting my sheep, there have been enough times when a lion or a bear has attacked my sheep. I did my best to run them off, but I’ve neither the courage nor the strength of David who slew them by himself. You’ve seen lions and bears in zoos at a distance. I tell you, it is far different to be confronted by one and hear his growl. Your hairs stand on end, and it takes a brave heart to keep from shaking or running.

Great News!

Many of you have been praying about Dr. Goligher's passport/visa snafu at the airport. Once again, God has used our wonderful immigration lawyer, Mr. Grode, to see the matter through.

Yesterday their interview was postponed a month, but Mr. Grode and Dr. Goligher were able to drop off the paperwork supporting his visa. Mr Grode just called with the good news that upon review the matter has been dropped and he may pick up the passport this afternoon!

Elizabeth's Story

(Part 3 of 5 advent stories)

Elizabeth’s Story

Luke said the baby leaped. Well, he did it with a good kick! He was six months at the time. I don’t think it was a coincidence that he “leaped” at Mary’s greeting. I know now about the Holy Spirit, and if any child was filled with the Spirit, it was my son John. I am sure the Holy Spirit was responsible for the greeting I gave Mary:

Year-End Giving

Here are a few reminders about year-end giving. The last Sunday of the year is Christmas Day. If you will be out of town and still want to give an offering, you can send in your contribution to the church at 1701 Delancey Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Please make sure to have the gift post-marked by December 31, 2011 to count for 2011. You can also use the online giving feature on Tenth’s website. If you do so, we request that you use the electronic check (ACH) option since the fees to Tenth are substantially lower. If you are interested in making a gift of stock, please contact the church office for instructions.

Zechariah’s Story

(Part 2 of 5 advent stories.)

Zechariah's Story
I know it was a foolish thing to say. Believe me, I know. I can’t forget that day. Without an angel, it already had become the greatest day of my life. I had been chosen by lot to burn incense on the golden altar for that day’s services. I had served more than forty years without the lot ever falling my way. And that’s it; once chosen, you are never given opportunity again. It is literally a once in a lifetime experience.

Staying Home for Christmas

Many of you have been praying for the senior minister's hearing before immigration officials this morning. The bottom line is that the interview has been postponed for a month due to the busy time of year. He was allowed to submit papers for review until the next meeting. This actually is what had been desired in the beginning. So, though the matter is not resolved, the original desire has been realized.

So, Lord willing, you can expect to see your pastor in the pulpit Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Angel's Story

For the five days of this week, I will post advent stories that I first gave in my church in Florida. Hope you enjoy them.

The Angel’s Story
I remember the story well as if it were but yesterday.  Time does not have quite the same effect on me as it does you human creatures. My memory does not become dim like yours. It is a good story.
