Really, Big Field Trip

Thanks to Andrew Duggan we can pass on that both this Saturday morning and next WHYY will run a 9 a.m. special on Turkey. Billed as "Exploring Turkey's history, geography, language and art, from the perspectives of young American tourists," it should be a great follow up on the 2008 Global Outreach conference. As Andrew, who entered the kid's art contest, noted, "Mom, can I watch that on Saturday? It would be good to learn some more about the country I made the art for."

Bible Reading Booklets

I just got this email from Pat Canavan about the Bible Reading booklets:

"I received another 50 booklets from the Alliance. I placed 10 in each of the narthex book cases and 10 more in the Delancey lobby. I left 20 in the narthex Diaconate closet for ushers to give to those who requested the Bible reading booklets last week. We went through the initial 150 booklets in just one week so these 50 extra will probably go fast too."

Don't tell Pat I posted this. It will be our little secret.

Temporary housing needed in spring

I am moving to Philadelphia in March, and I will be looking for a place to live until I get married around June. I thought, instead of looking for temporary housing for the spring, I would contact local churches in case there is a need for live-in help. For example, and elderly relative or at-home mother who needs help in the home, in exchange of a bed to sleep in. My fiance and I are currently becoming members of the sister PCA church in Fishtown called Liberti Church, lead by Steve Huber. Contact me.

This is great. I can now go to reformation21 to get postings from Derek Thomas for events at Tenth. Here it is:

Phil is in ____ and asked me to post this:

Tenth Presbyterian Church is hosting its 4th annual Workshop on Biblical Exposition, February 4 to 6, on the theme of Apocalyptic Literature.

The workshop is sponsored by the Charles Simeon Trust and supported by the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. Speakers include Dr. Philip Ryken, Rev. David Helm (Holy Trinity Church, Chicago), and Rev. Aaron Messner (Covenant College). To register or for further information, visit the Simeon Trust website or contact Robert Polen at polenrsp@gmail.com or 215-735-7688.

Jesus Loves Me Story

Hi Marion,

Here's a trivia question for you... Did you know that the author of "Jesus Loves Me," the 2nd hymn we sang in today's service, also taught Sunday School to West Point Cadets along with her sister? There is a special display and information about her at the Cadet Chapel on Post. I've included a weblink to her story that was in Christianity Today a number of years ago.

What? I'm on the Colombia team?

Tomorrow Pastor Bruce McDowell flies to Colombia to teach and attend presbytery meetings there. We are his team and our job is prayer. Here are some specific things we can ask the Lord for:
  • January 7 and 8: Wisdom for Presbytery meetings
  • January 8 and 9: Effective communication during two television interviews
  • January 9: Clarity as he leads a seminar on Calvinism for church leaders
  • January 10 and 11: The power of the Spirit as he speaks at an evangelistic outreach and preaches at a local church
  • January 12: Clear teaching as he speaks to church leaders and pastoral candidates on "Baptism"
  • January 13: Safe travel home

I'd appreciate your prayers for an important Tenth leaders retreat we are having this coming weekend. It will include elders, deacons, deaconesses, and even ministers who attend Tenth but are not on staff. The theme is "Tending the Flock," and will focus on how we can better provide care for all Tenth members through the parishes.
