The Voice of the Lord

Psalm 29

A Psalm of David.

1Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.

3The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the LORD, over many waters.
4The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

5The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.

7The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
8The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, "Glory!"

10The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
11May the LORD give strength to his people!
May the LORD bless his people with peace!

I preached a sermon on this psalm in Florida in 2004, the year that four hurricanes hit the state. If you would like to read a sermon for worship during our hurricane, click here, then click "Psalm 29."

Of umbrellas and prayer pockets

Just received word of a cluster of Tenth families who live near each other gathering for prayer and singing tomorrow evening after the storm has passed. What a great idea! What a great opportunity to meet with other Christians--Tenth members or not--to pray for our neighbors and for one another. Do you know a believer in walking distance? Why not set something up?

Worshiping on Sunday

I received a question about Sunday service still being webcasted. The primary difficulty would be requiring the minister and necessary personnel to handle sound and video, open the building, etc, to come in. They would do so at their risk, not knowing that power would be on or that the webcast would be able to go out under the expected weather conditions. If you do have internet service that day, you could go to vimeo.com and view a service that you may have missed or to see again.

Mayor's Office Update

Here is the latest from the mayor's office.

*Hurricane Warning: No SEPTA service Sun. Prepare now. Call 311 for info. Get local news updates*

Philadelphia, August 26, 2011 The City of Philadelphia continues to prepare for Hurricane Irene and its potential impact on Philadelphia. The Emergency Operations Center will open on Saturday, August 27 at 6 p.m. to monitor the storm and coordinate the City s response and recovery activities. The City will not issue an evacuation order; however, citizens should evacuate if they are in a potentially dangerous situation and proceed to a City shelter or other safe location. The City s 311 Call Center is currently open 24-hours through Monday, August 29. SEPTA will suspend all transit services beginning at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Coincidence?

Hhmmm...I'm starting to putting two and two together. Liam arrives in May. Then we have our hottest month ever, our wettest month ever, an earthquake, and now a hurricane.

Sunday Services Canceled

Due to the Philadelphia area being under a hurricane warning, Sunday’s services (August 28) and all other church activities have been canceled. We encourage Tenth worshippers to remain in their homes and to check in on people they may know who are vulnerable to the weather.

The mayor of Philadelphia has asked that no one drive on Sunday. All Septa services will be shut down midnight Saturday - city, regional, everything. All parks and recreation centers will be closed Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
If you live in an area that is known for flooding, you are being asked to move to safer ground. Already the ground is saturated and flooding is almost assured. Be prepared for losing utility power. The conditions forecast as similar to those I experienced in Florida of two tropical storms. Though the winds were not of hurricane power, nevertheless, many trees toppled over due to the saturation of the ground.

If you are a Tenth member or attender and need help, let us know today while we can still find help for you.

Hurricane Update

I am expecting a city hall announcement around noon regarding the approaching storm. Expect a posting by 2:00 at the latest, probably earlier, regarding Sunday services. If the storm's path continues as projected, I would say it is likely we will not open the church. But keep checking.

Meanwhile, please be checking on church members who may be vulnerable to the storm. If they need help and you cannot assist, contact an elder or deacon or deaconess. You can call here at the church (215.735.7688) if you need help.

Hurricane News

With Hurricane Irene (an ironic name for a hurricane if ever there was one), expected to be close the eastern coast, we are preparing means to communicate plans for Sunday services. Keep an eye on the blog for the next two days. We are likely to send out an eblast to members and attenders who are signed up in our database with an email address. Below is the latest information from ReadyNotifyPA. Let me note, that assuming that we do have our regular services on Sunday, please use good sense on determining if you should come in. We are a center city church and thus we keep in mind that we have members who can walk or reasonably ride in. Those of you outside the city, though, need to exercise caution about road conditions. Now for the alert:

Grief Share

I am exited to announce a pilot class, so to speak, coming up in the fall and meeting in my office. It is more of a support group than a class. Called Griefshare, this class will provide a safe environment to walk through the issues that we face when grieving the loss of someone or something in our lives. I say "something" because not only do we grieve the loss of a loved to death or broken relationship, we also grieve over the loss of a job or home, anything that has played a central part of our lives.

Floyd and Payne Together!

Oh my! I am reviewing Sunday's evening worship and for the soli deo gloria and the Musical Offering, Ruth Naomi Floyd and Sondra Payne are singing together! Honestly, I have dreamed about these two singers singing together. You have got to be in church before 6:15 p.m. for the soli deo gloria. They will be singing: O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus, Give Me Jesus/Steal Away, I Want Jesus to Walk with Me, and His Eye Is on the Sparrow.

In the Library

(Sylvia Duggan, the church librarian sent this notice in.) On Sunday Pastor Goligher mentioned the book “The Jesus Storybook Bible” by Sally Lloyd-Jones. This book was a new addition to the church library this summer and is available as both a hardback book and a 3 CD audio book for you to check out and share as a family.

Also, this Sunday the Tenth Press article quoted from the book “Same Lake, Different Boat” by Stephannie Hubach.
