Don Quixote production staged on Avenue of the Arts

Don Quixote is being staged from May 21-June 7, 2009 at Broad Street Ministries on Avenue of the Arts. According to an article in the Philadelphia City Paper, the director is a "fundamentalist Christian" with a vision to see faith & theater meet. The cast includes both professional actors and local homeless people.

Here's a brief description from Philly FunSavers this week (where you can get tickets at halfprice, only $7.50): With an intrepid ensemble combining professional and community actors, director Lear deBessonet (One of Time Out New York's 25 People to Watch) creates a compelling reinterpretation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Set in a richly imagined anachronistic world where 16th Century Spain meets Center City Philadelphia, featuring puppets by Emily Decola, Robert Smythe of Mum Puppet Theater Fame and original music by gypsy-punk band The Psalters, Quixote asks the question, is it insane to believe in a more just world?

David Gunther—Juris Doctorate

Elizabeth and Bruce Gunther and godparents Yoshin and David Swank are happy to report that David Gunther received his Juris Doctorate degree from Penn Law on Monday, May 18. David also successfully finished two years as Professor David Skeel's research assistant.

Time Off

Ginger and I leave tomorrow for a family wedding and vacation in Edisto Island, SC. Unlike other pastors, I do not keep checking my email and I do not own a Blackberry, though I enjoy blackberry pie.

If you want a posting on my blog, you can plead with any of the contributors listed on the right hand column. Dot Boersma is probably your best bet (dboersma@tenth.org).

Please behave while I am gone.

Don Kennedy memorial service information

Bright Light Tonight

An Air Force Minotaur 1 rocket will be launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia on Tuesday, May 19, between 735PM and 1130PM. Wednesday, May 20 is the backup launch date. This rocket may be visible by residents in the Eastern United States as a bright light heading to the southeast from the mid-Atlantic coast.

Given the weather forecast calls for clear skies; NASA believes it may be possible for this event to be seen from Philadelphia

Don Kennedy is home

We just heard that Don Kennedy went home to be with the Lord this afternoon at 4 pm. Keep Carol in your prayers.

Don went into the hospital last week with heart trouble and eventually required surgery from which he was unable to recover. A memorial service is being planned, probably sometime between June 3-5. Cards would be welcome, but be respectful of too many calls.
