Getting to Church on Sunday

Well, I tried but failed. I went to the website of the Race for the Cure event taking place this Sunday morning. It has lots of information, except for giving the route of the race! If like previous years, the route will start along the Ben Franklin Parkway and go all the way down to Columbus Blvd, then back up Market or Chestnut. I think. At least they changed the old route which literally circled the church preventing any car from getting through. If you take 76 and get off on the South Street exit you should be safe.

and the one who understands obtain guidance,
to understand a proverb and a saying,

An Ex-addict's Testimony

This is from a Fellowship Bible Study member: "My life was a mess. I ran away from God.  I lost all the 'things' I had acquired and I almost lost my toes to frostbite because I was living on the street. Today I'm full of joy about the blessing-salvation God has given me.  I'm free from the slavery of addiction's sin. I don't have to do that anymore.  I'm free to walk with the Lord.  I'm free to cherish the hope that my Savior promised."

Female Roommate(s) Wanted

One or two female housemates wanted to share a three-story home with young professional Christian women.  There is one bedroom still available either as a single or double occupancy.

* It's a great house--built in 2007 with hardwood floors, granite countertops, washer/dryer, security system, 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, basement, and garage.
* It's a great location--8 blocks due south of Rittenhouse Square and along Septa bus route #2.
* It's a great deal--$2000/month split 3-4 ways plus utilities. Each bedroom is at least 16' x18' and includes 2 closets and a private bathroom. This well maintained house has been shared by 4-5 women since its purchase.

Lease starts July 1 though a verbal commitment is needed before May 15 in order to renew the lease. Pictures and tours are available upon request.

For more information, please email Christy Corbett at ccorbett74@gmail.com.

The Limits of Proverbs

Some of you may know that over three years, with the help of others, I wrote daily devotions through the book of Proverbs. I am bringing them back (though you can read all of them anytime at my DMC Resource site) as daily postings. I have updated them, writing the ones I had missed before.

Proverbs 1:1

The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

This first verse is instructive. These proverbs are the results of Solomon's writings and his collection of ancient sayings. Consider this description of Solomon in 1 Kings 10:23: "Thus King Solomon excelled all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom. And the whole earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put into his mind." We know this is the result of God answering his prayer for wisdom to govern his people. Because Solomon asked for wisdom, God granted wisdom and riches and fame.

I Pledge Allegeance

Another welcomed surprise is learning that our accounting assistant, Mei-lin Walter, has become an American citizen. Congratulations, Mei-lin!

New Staff

I see that while I was away, we have hired three new staff members, one for each month of my absence. Charlotte Eastlack is our new accountant, following Jessie Yang; Ruth Kiehlmeier has stepped into Elizabeth Mosebrook's role of TIF (Tenth International Fellowship) assistant; and Jessica Sinagra has joined the sexton staff. Now, if I could just remember the name of the new senior minister...

Doctor of Divinity

I've always suspected Rick Phillips of having a divine quality about him, but to make it official, he is receiving his Doctor of Divinity degree on Friday, May 18, from Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Congratulations, Rick!

Shocking Return

So I go away and we buy a building? That would have topped the list of surprises, if not learning that Ron Ferner and Beth Ann Haven are engaged! But that does not make the top of the list. The biggest shocker was seeing Bruce McDowell without a mustache!

Startling Effect

Yikes! As much as I like my staff, finding their pictures where my family should be as a frightening effect. Just where I look over to see my beautiful wife smiling at me is a picture of a cheerful Robert Polen. It gives the chills.
