Email Woes
We have been having problems with our church email account for the last week or two. What it means is that sometimes we receive email and sometimes we don't. Sometimes the email we send gets through and sometimes it doesn't. We do not receive indication either way. This explains why you don't hear from me sometimes and I don't hear from you. Yes, the problem is being worked on.
Teachers wanted
Our friends at liberti are starting a new elementary school, Philadelphia Classical School, and are soliciting applications for experienced K-2 teachers. Those interested should send resumes to the Head of School, Ross Hatton.
Wise Discipline
Proverbs 13:24
Whoever spares the rod hates his son,
but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
Understand the message here. It is that parents - because they love their children - will exercise appropriate discipline to correct them. They teach their children that sinful behavior brings punishment.
The message is not that parents must always use physical punishment for discipline.

Poverty and Injustice
Proverbs 13:23
The fallow ground of the poor would yield much food,
but it is swept away through injustice.
Here is a sobering observation, not to make us cynical but to make us compassionate and zealous for justice. It is a reminder that righteousness is not merely to be about personal holiness, but about how we care for others, particularly those who are poor and defenseless.

Inheritance
Proverbs 13:22
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children,
but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous.
Much could be said about what the inheritance of a good man entails. Foremost is leaving a legacy of faith in Christ and of walking in righteousness. But we should not be quick to lay aside the subject of money. Indeed, Christians are quick to do so, somehow disconnecting a righteous life from how money is handled. There are many Christians devoted to ministry and yet leave their families in a destitute state. Christian financial consultant Ron Blue tells of a minister who only served small churches until his retirement; and yet he had a million dollars in assets. How? By spending less than he took in and saving the remainder bit by bit.

Disaster and Reward
Proverbs 13:21
Disaster pursues sinners,
but the righteous are rewarded with good.
Sinners do not merely flirt with danger; they place targets on their back to make sure danger does not miss the mark. Furthermore, they do not see that disaster is already upon them. They are unaware of the seeds of destruction they have sown: a marriage destroyed before they know it; a job loss before the notice has come; friends who have unknowingly become enemies. They are strolling in the park, unaware that an army of destruction is bearing down on them.

Wise Companionship
Proverbs 13:20
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise,
but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
There are individuals who were foolish in their behavior and beliefs, yet fell into friendships with mature, godly believers and came to a strong faith that turned them around. There are also individuals who professed Christ and seemed mature, yet came into the circle of unbelievers and/or foolish people and then fell away from the faith and/or engaged in foolish behavior.
