And in the Morning

The posting below notes that Dr. Al Mohler of Southern Baptist Seminary is preaching Sunday evening. We also have him for the morning. The message is "Little Children, Keep Yourselves from Idols," from 1 John 5:21.

Reformation Hymn Festival

Sunday night is the annual Reformation Hymn Festival. The music focus will be on the hymns of Martin Luther. Yes, he wrote more than "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." Actually, 37, though we will keep to seven. All the choirs will participate, including the children's. Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary will give the message - "Satan Cannot Sing: Martin Luther's Celebration of the Gospel in Christian Hymns."

Be sure to arrive by 6:15 to hear the various choirs.

Skype Bible Study

I would like to hold a pilot Bible study with up to ten people in the group. I would like to have one meeting next Thursday, November 3, from 9:00am to 10am EST. The location would be in your home or office or wherever you would be using your computer. You would need to download Skype and have a video camera. I bought mine at Radio Shack. They range from $30-60. The Skype download is free. I just had a group conference call with my daughter and son-in-law as they sat on different sides of a room using separate computers. (I know, I'm working with them on their communication problems.) Anyhow, they did not need to pay for the conferencing feature.

Are there nine of you out there willing to join in on this experiment? You don't have to be a Tenth member or in the state or the country, for that matter. Let me know by email. My Skype name is mg79clark.

Reformed Resources

The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals is reducing its book inventory. They will continue to offer books by Alliance executive staff members and all the audio resources they are known for. But they are no longer stocking and selling books by other authors. You can take advantage of this change by visiting ReformedResources.org today. They are offering a huge selection of books at considerable discounts. Just in time to stock up on gifts for Christmas or your holiday reading.

Reformation Books

Want to “brush up” on your heroes of the Protestant Reformation before Sunday night’s Reformation Hymn Festival? Well, on Sunday morning the church library will have a small display of books you can choose from to help with that, including Mr. Pipes and Psalms and Hymns of the Reformation by Douglas Bond. The library is located in the Catacombs room C4 and is open from 10:30 to 11:00 A.M. between the church services.

Clean Sheets

You are invited to an inspiring performance of CLEAN SHEETS, sponsored by Chelten Baptist Church.
November 2, 2011 at 7:00 PM at Chelten Baptist Church, 1601 N Limekiln Road, Dresher, PA.

Miho Kahn’s life, like most of ours, has its ups and downs, but hers takes twists and turns to the extreme.
With her compass spinning wildly, her roller coaster of experience is a parent’s worst nightmare,
leading her into deadly situations and violent outcomes.
CLEAN SHEETS is the telling of this story. Brutally honest and beautifully told.  This powerful piece is as original in its telling as is the story itself. Music, drama, humor, and heartache told from the heart, because the experience is hers.

Admission is free, a love offering will be taken. More reviews here. Addresses mature subject matter, not suitable for most children under 13.

Cultivating Lives

A men's small group that I meet with is reading through Rick Phillips' book, The Masculine Mandate. Literally, we are reading it together, spending about 30-40 minutes reading the book aloud and discussing it, then having prayer. We just completed chapter 2 in which Rick is presenting the mandate from Genesis 2, namely, to work and to keep. I particularly was struck by his comment in regard to work about the "cultivating" that man was given to do in the garden includes for us cultivating the lives of our wives and children.

I suppose it hit me because I had been reading in Sports Illustrated (I could read worse) the story of Jerry West (one of the legends of basketball in college and pro) who to this day struggles to find peace due in large part to having an abusive father. I had also been listening to a song by Dan Fogleberg (no comments on my musical taste, please) that is a loving tribute to his father, "The Leader of the Band." Husbands and fathers, now is the time to be cultivating the lives of your wives and children. Indeed, all men, now is the time for you to be cultivating the lives of others for whom you can be even now a positive influence.
