Discerning Prudence
Proverbs 14:8
The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way,
but the folly of fools is deceiving.
Here is the great prize of the prudent - he can see where he is going. If he has strayed from the path of righteousness, he will catch himself and turn back to the path. If he is heading into trouble, he can see the danger ahead and act accordingly. Thus, the prudent turns to Christ in faith and repentance. Where others cannot see the calamity awaiting them, he sees and turns to his Savior. Where others cannot see the glory of the righteous path, he sees and keeps his eyes upon the prize. Where others cannot see the freedom of bondage to Christ, he sees and rejoices in his freedom to live for the glory of God. Where others can only see with their physical eyes, he sees what is unseen and moves forward with anticipation towards the unseen, eternal glory.

Leave the Room
Proverbs 14:7
Leave the presence of a fool,
for there you do not meet words of knowledge.
We can save ourselves much frustration if we would heed this proverb. There are times in which, literally, we need to walk out of a room in which foolishness is spoken. There are many times in which we ought not to answer foolish words, be they spoken or written. With the advent of email, and the ability to forward email to masses, and the proliferation of websites, blogsites, electronic bulletin boards, and chat-rooms, there are many more avenues for foolishness to take.

Seeking Wisdom
Proverbs 14:6
A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain,
but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.
The sad irony that Proverbs teaches is that the people who need wisdom the most - the fool, the scoffer, the wicked - are the ones least likely to attain it, while the wise are the ones who find it and profit from it.

A Lying Nature
Proverbs 14:5
A faithful witness does not lie,
but a false witness breathes out lies.
For some people, lying makes them uncomfortable, while for others it is second nature.

The church in the war-torn region
What's it like to be a Christian in Afghanistan or Pakistan? How has the church weathered all the tumult in the region? At this Sunday's Global Outreach lunch, we have the enormous privilege of hearing from a man who has just returned from decades of living in the region. Don't miss this month's Around the World in 80 Minutes.
Worthwhile Investment
Proverbs 14:4
Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean,
but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.
When there are no oxen, the farmer does not have the trouble of feeding them or cleaning up after them. He can keep his barn nice and neat. His one problem is that he cannot plow his fields! If he desires abundant crops, then he needs his oxen and must be willing to invest in them. The moral, then, is that if we desire to reap wealth, we must be willing to put in the labor and make the sacrifices to produce a harvest.
