Listed in the Book of Kings

Phil Ryken may no longer be in the pulpit but he is still producing books from his pulpit ministry. 1 Kings is now out and dedicated to me...well, actually to the pastoral staff who served with him during his years here. But I am one of the first names listed while Paul Tripp and Carroll Wynne are listed last. Look next for a book on 1 Corinthians 13.

Medical donations for Colombia

Support the team traveling to Colombia in August by donating supplies needed for the health clinic—vitamins (adult, chewables for children, and prenatal), antibiotic ointment, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, medical gloves, alcohol pads, cotton balls, band-aids, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Drop them off in Reception Hall in a donation box marked Colombia Trip between Sunday morning services.

"The Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award is presented to..."

...our own Tom Elliott (ruling elder and trombone player extraordinaire)!

"The Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award is presented biennially by the Yale School of Music to participants in the Symposium of Music in Schools. These awards honor fifty music educators from across the country who are selected for their outstanding accomplishments teaching music in public schools."

So treat the man with some respect because that bone player has distinction!

Small Chest freezer available. Works fine. Needs a good home. The freezer is a Kenmore 12 cu ft. chest freezer, approximately 3'w x 3'h x 27"d. Contact Nell by email.

Boxes

It now feels right to walk into the Senior Minister's study and see books on the shelves. Empty shelves look, well, empty. One consequence of emptying boxes both in his study and more in his home is that he has lots of empty boxes. If you want some and can pick them up, contact Liam's assistant Elizabeth Carlson to make arrangements for getting them.

Jonny McGreevy

For anyone who has not heard, Jonny McGreevy has accepted the position to pastor Greenisland Baptist Church in Northern Ireland, just north of Belfast. This will be a return to home territory for Jonny and Laura. They will leave at the end of the summer, taking with them a new baby expected at the beginning of July.

Dead Phone

It is possible that some people are wondering why I will not return their phone calls. My phone has died. So any messages left from the past three weeks have vanished. If you call now, and I am not in, leave a message with the receptionist.

Year End Report

"So," you have been saying to yourself, "I wonder how Phil Ryken's first year has gone at Wheaton College?" You can find out from the president's mouth at this Gospel Coalition interview, the correct link as opposed to the errant one I originally posted.

The Valedictorian's Speech

Nathaniel Schmucker gave the valedictorian speech at the commencement service of Delaware County Christian School. I know of two other DC graduates - Josiah Cohen and Josh Ryken, whose father was the commencement speaker. Read all about it in this article. Were there other Tenth members graduating? Indeed, I'd love to hear what Tenth students graduated from high school, college, and grad-school.

The Westminster Brass

This past Saturday, the Westminster Brass celebrate 35 years of performance by giving a family concert in the church. It was a wonderful time of listening to music ranging from children's songs to old-time sing-a-longs to a commissioned piece for the brass. Tom Elliott gives a little history here of the group.

Crime Fighting Hymns

I'm not sure Paul Jones would have listed this as a reason for playing hymns and classical music, but apparently they are effective in battling drug dealing. Melissa Gilstrap sent me this article in the Daily news.

Lost Ark Anniversary

Today's Inquirer informs us that 6/12/11 marks the 30th anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark. And Liam's OUTSTANDING sermon today...the Lost Ark...hmmmm

seems worthy of a Marion blog doesn't it ;) Robin Vallette

The Franklin Fountain

"The Franklin Fountain has the best ice cream in Philadelphia." So testifies Jennifer Polen and not because co-owner Eric Berley is a Tenth member. Check it out for yourself at 116 Market Street.

The Distinguished Tom Elliott

The Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award is presented biennially by the Yale School of Music to participants in the Symposium on Music in Schools. These awards honor fifty music educators from across the country who are selected for their outstanding accomplishments teaching music in public schools.

Our own Ruling Elder Tom Elliott, from the Lower Merion School District, was selected for this distinguished award.

Providential Hiring

"She works part time as a church receptionist, tries to land freelance writing gigs, and relies on her faith that God has a plan for her." God's plan for our Friday receptionist Kari Randall apparently included a Christian employer reading this article in the Philadelphia Inquirer and contacting her about a public relations job after he read about her faith. Kari begins on Monday. We will miss her here, as she has done a wonderful job for us. But we give thanks for such a witness to God's providential work in her life.
