Dog Needs Foster Home

My wonderful, new houseguest needs an intermediate home for Henry, her friendly, well-housebroken 4 year-old dog, as she stays with me, because my building will not even accept visits from non-service dogs.  Please contact Henry's  Jesus-loving "mom" at 215.678.4113 (24/7).  She says, "Please, help me not lose him, because he will be put up for adoption rather quickly, if he can't find a foster home."

Seems Right

Proverbs 14:12

There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death.

This proverb makes two matter-of-fact statements that, depending on who we are, we tend to ignore. One is that the man of the world lives the way he does because it seems right to him. We Christians seem to forget this.

C. Everett Koop Conversion

The following is taken from Koop, pgs 84-86:

It was Erna Goulding, a valued friend and a nurse at Children's Hospital, who sensed that I was searching for spiritual meaning. One evening, as Betty and I left our apartment to attend the musical program that attracted many to the first Baptist Church in center city Philadelphia, Erna suggested we walk a block beyond the Baptist Church and go to the evening service of the Tenth Presbyterian Church. She thought I would appreciate the intellectual approach to Christianity offered by its minister, Donald Grey Barnhouse. But we did not take her suggestion.

The Tent That Flourishes

Proverbs 14:11

The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
but the tent of the upright will flourish.

The end of the wicked is seen every day. They cheat their way to success and yet end in jail, are killed, or experience some other kind of calamity. Because they build with worthless materials and through unethical practices, their very works lead to their downfall. But the upright, though they may experience trials, flourish. Many flourish materially because their integrity and wisdom bring success. Many may be poor and yet flourish in happiness through loving relationships. For many, they leave a flourishing legacy - their children succeeding beyond them, or, again, leaving a legacy of love.

Lonely Is the Heart

Proverbs 14:10

The heart knows its own bitterness,
and no stranger shares its joy.

Ultimately we are alone with our hearts. Even now, as you read this, sadness or joy that only you know lies in your heart. The closer we are to others, the more open our hearts; but even in the most intimate relationship, the other person cannot see, and more to the point, cannot feel all our emotions. Nor can he/she know the motives and feelings of our hearts except what we reveal. We may laugh when we are distraught. We may feign sorrow when really we are happy. We may feign reverence and love for God when in truth we have no feeling for him at all.

Mocking God

Proverbs 14:9

Fools mock at the guilt offering,
but the upright enjoy acceptance.

Fools never apologize for their foolishness; even when they make an attempt (which they do only from pressure), they always add "but" - but I did not intend to harm anyone; but I am trying to do my best; but I am misunderstood. Fools see admission of sin and mistakes as a sign of weakness. They want to be strong, or at least perceived as strong and confident. Losers worry about the impact of their actions. Weak people worry about offending others or making wrong decisions.

Dr. C. Everett Koop, 1916-2013

We just received news that Dr. C. Everett Koop died this afternoon. How we thank the Lord for his long faithful life serving many children and their families as a pediatric surgeon at CHOP; his service to our country as Surgeon General; and his service here at Tenth Presbyterian Church as a ruling elder. He will be deeply missed.
The family will have a quiet, private funeral service. Tenth Church will have a memorial service in the near future. Please pray for the Lord's comfort for Dr. Koop's wife, Cora, and for his children and their families.
