RE-8: Art for the City

Saturday, May 18, 4pm-7pm, the intersection of 8th and Butler Streets, Hunting Park, Philadelphia

In 2007, Rev. Andy Kim (WTS MDiv) planted 8th St. Community Church at the intersection of 8th and Butler Streets in Hunting Park, Philadelphia--the same intersection where, back in the 80s, the so-called "Blue Tape Warriors" sold with impunity massive quantities of illegal drugs. Andy recently managed to purchase an abandoned building on the opposite corner, hoping to rehabilitate it and use as a community center. But even with a great deal of generous help, the community center remains far from useable.

We'd like to invite you to "RE-8," a site-specific project curated by Tenth members Sabina Tichindeleanu and Emilie Keim. RE-8 will consist of original works on paper exploring a theme of re-habilitation, re-storation, re-newal--of 8th St Community Center.

Dealing with Affliction

Proverbs 15:15

All the days of the afflicted are evil,
but the cheerful of heart has a continual feast.

It seems here that the proverb is not contrasting those who are afflicted and those who have good things happening to them; rather, it is between those who live feeling afflicted and those who live counting their blessings.

Crossing the Bar

By Alfred Lord Tenneyson (1809-1892):

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
    And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
    When I put out to sea.

Seeking Knowledge

Proverbs 15:14

The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge,
but the mouths of fools feed on folly.

The point here is that the wise earnestly desire knowledge. Reading is not something they do merely when there is nothing good on TV. They do not catch up on the latest news in order to be conversational. They do not learn trivia to be competitive in games or make themselves sound interesting. They love knowledge because it gives them further understanding about things that matter.

Stormcock in Elder

Before there was Joy Davidman, there was another woman in the life of C. S. Lewis. As Lewis told a friend, if he were not a confirmed bachelor, Ruth Pitter would be the woman he would like to marry. Putting romance aside, Pitter credited Lewis's BBC radio broadcasts for lifting her out of depression and eventually to become a Christian. Lewis admired Pitter as a great poet and sought her advice for his own poetry. Barbara Bartow sent in the following poem by Pitter.

Cheerful Heart

Proverbs 15:13

A glad heart makes a cheerful face,
but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed.

This proverb can be taken as both descriptive and prescriptive. It describes the effect of the heart on the outer being and welfare of its owner. A glad heart cheers up the face and the spirit. It promotes well being. Sorrow, on the other hand, crushes the spirit, makes the face downcast, and adversely affects a person's health. We can read the same information in scientific studies.

The Frog

This sublime poem was sent to me by Tenth elder Hugh Taylor.

The Frog

What a wonderful bird the frog are.
When he stand, he sit almost:
When he hop, he fly almost.
He ain’t got no sense hardly;
He ain’t got no tail hardly, either.
When he sit, he sit on what he ain’t got almost.

Receiving Reproof

Proverbs 15:12

A scoffer does not like to be reproved;
he will not go to the wise.

The cynic, or scoffer, thinks he is wise because he is able to find fault in others, especially those in authority. And the greatest scoffers are those who have never held position of authority or responsibility. They despise reproof, they think, because of the faults they find in authority figures such as parents and teachers. The reality is that they hate reproof because of their unwillingness to face their own faults.

The Open Heart

Proverbs 15:11

Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord;
how much more the hearts of the children of man!

For the writer, Sheol and Abaddon represent the places of the dead, that which is beyond human sight and knowledge. They are the uttermost places, far from human existence. If Sheol and Abaddon, then, are open before the Lord as though meadows under broad daylight, how much more then are our hearts open before the Lord.
