Loving God and Neighbor

Proverbs 14:31

Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker,
but he who is generous to the needy honors him.

God takes personally how we treat our neighbor. Here are other verses making the same point.

"So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconiled to your brother, and then come and ofer your gift" (Matthew 5:23-24).

A Tranquil Heart

Proverbs 14:30

A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh,
but envy makes the bones rot.

This is a good proverb to post on your mirror or refrigerator, wherever you are going to see it daily. The apostle Paul who faced more troubles and deprivations than most people found the blessing of a tranquil heart. Read what he says in Philippians 4:11-13:

Slow to Anger

Proverbs 14:29

Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding,
but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.

It requires wisdom to control anger. One must be wise enough, first of all, to know what circumstance calls for anger. Jesus knew when to act in anger and when not. Thus, he spoke in anger at the proper times against hypocrisy and injustice; and yet, when the greatest injustice was committed against him, he exercised control.

Temporary Housing Needed

I received the email below. Contact Antony at this email address if you can help.

We are a Christian married couple looking for housing as we transition from apartment to apartment. We move out on Friday, March 29 and the move-in date for the new is on Monday, April 15. We are needing housing from Monday, April 1 - Monday, April 15 and prefer to sublet or rent out a room from a Christian family. Recently married and on one income, we don't have much money but would be able to pay a small amount. I work at Curtis Institute of Music and would like it to be within commuting distance. Do you know anyone with a spare room or someone who would allow us to sublet their place for two weeks?

A King's Glory

Proverbs 14:28

In a multitude of people is the glory of a king,
but without people a prince is ruined.

A king cannot reign without a people. Indeed, without a people to rule over he is not a king. By its very definition, kingship is about relationship. A person may have great qualities, but if there is no one over whom and for whom to exercise those qualities, then he has no status. If a king is only as great a king in relation to the people he governs, then, however great he may like to regard himself, he is dependent upon those who are beneath him for his status. Thus the greatest of leaders is dependent upon the humblest of followers.
