Housing Request

I am a female, strong Christian, who is looking for a roommate, as I will be attending graduate school in Center City beginning in September. I am a respectful, fun, and responsible individual. If anyone needs or knows of someone in need of a roommate, I'd appreciate talking with you further. Please feel free to email me (Ashley). Thank you so much and God bless.

Welcome, Lander!

A Symptomatic Asymptote

I learned (well, I'm not sure that I have learned) a new word today - asymptotically. As you probably know, that means: "(of a function) approaching a given value as an expression containing a variable tends to infinity."

Hmm...so I look up asymptote, which is much easier to understand:
"a straight line that is closely approached by a plane curve so that the perpendicular distance between them decreases to zero as the distance from the origin increases to infinity."

There is a reason I did not go into mathematics or physics. What leads to this discussion is a graph I was sent that shows the cumulative giving chart of for the Capital Campaign. "The total approaches the final number asymptotically." To put it in simple DMC terms, it means that the giving is slowing down as people who have pledged are completing their pledges. It's like the feeling you get climbing a mountain. With perseverance you have made it almost to the top, but you've expended most of your energy so that the final steps are the hardest to complete.

Ryken Inauguration Webcast

So you wish you could attend Phil Ryken's inaugural service September 17 but can't make the trip. (Some people, after all, do have to work.) Well, you can still watch it live (if your boss doesn't catch you). Here is the info you need to watch a webcast.

People can go to www.wetn.org. You’ll see a link that says “watch live” and another that says “listen live.” Under "watch live," you’ll see three options. The best one to choose for most people is “Silverlight 350k” or “Windows 350k.” Those two give the best looking video. The third option is “Windows Media 32k.” That is a much slower stream that we keep mostly for folks overseas with slower internet connections. There will also be a link on the College main home page that if clicked will take people to http://www.wetn.org/. Video of the entire ceremony will be placed on the WETN page within several hours of the event’s completion.

In Oslo

My daughter Jean and husband Lucas arrived in Oslo this morning. Sigh...

Thank the Lord for technology. Ginger spoke with Jean and looked at their place via Skype. The adventure begins!

SEPTA Alerts

Several people have asked me about the ability to receive text or email alerts whenever SEPTA service such as Regional Rail (RRD), the Market Frankford Line (MFL), Norristown High Speed Line (NHSL), Broad Street Line (BSL) or other service is disrupted or significantly delayed. You can now sign up for such alerts at phila.alertpa.org You must first set up an account listing your PDA's, cell phones, email addresses and other devices. From there you can select the types of alerts you wish to receive including severe weather and traffic alerts.

Doug Logan Preaching

If you were in the evening service last night or following the webcast, I should ask you to be patient with the preacher Doug Logan. I am still working with him on being more expressive.  He needs to shed that reservedness in the pulpit. I think I'll have him watch some of my preaching, so he can learn from my techniques. If you missed it last night, be sure to check in on the church website in a couple of days.

The Servants

I've just posted the manuscript of yesterday's sermon - The Servants - on my website.
