Bad Joke

Proverb 10:23

Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool,
but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.

This proverb strikes at the root of what distinguishes the wise person from the fool. It is not intellectual ability. It is not education or training. It is what gives a person pleasure.

The Blessing of the Lord

Proverbs 10:22

The blessing of the LORD makes rich,
and he adds no sorrow with it.

Perhaps the best way to understand this proverb is to contrast the blessing of the Lord with the blessing of the wicked.

Feeding

Proverb 10:21

The lips of the righteous feed many,
but fools die for lack of sense.

The lips of the righteous feed the souls of many. They feed truth to those hungry for righteousness and for wisdom. They feed life to those starving for words to nourish their spirits. They feed conviction to those straying off the path of life, and they feed comfort to those needing yet again to hear the grace of the gospel.

Valuable Speech

Proverbs 10:20

The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
the heart of the wicked is of little worth.

The tongue of the righteous is choice silver for the words he speaks convey beauty and truth. From the heart of the wicked comes vulgarity and lies, worthless words.

A reminder to pray

Yesterday we received an update from a pastor in a country where Christians are sometimes persecuted. He concluded his note with this plea, "We are so thankful for your prayers with us. Please continue to remember some lands with not much church, or teachings of our wonderful Lord Jesus Christ, and please remember the suffering parts of the world when you are praying. All your prayers as a blessing whisper for many hearts through Holy Spirit."

Proverbs 10:19

When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.

We have a similar saying: Give a man enough rope and he will hang himself. The more verbose we are the more likely we will say something to get ourselves in trouble or cause trouble.
