Smedley Scene

An ambulance just went by. I wonder if it is part of the movie production. The crew is shooting a scene on Smedley.

Of Mice and Glass

I got it! In fact, I got two copies. One to read, the other to save and have autographed by Bryan Glass. His "Mice Templar" came out today and I grabbed the two copies on the shelf at Out of Time Comics. It looks great and I am already in to the story. See a posting from Monday with further info.

Welcome, Karen!

Dear ones,

What joy! Meet the first Rafiki baby in Liberia! Baby Karen was abandoned as a newborn at a local hospital. All attempts to locate any family failed. The Ministry of Health asked if we could accept her at the Rafiki Village. Although we’ve not yet moved in, we’ve made arrangements to have her cared for until our cottages are finished enough that we can move in.

We also have been contacted about twins whose mother died in childbirth. God is bringing the children! So please pray that the contractor will FINISH soon and that we can move in! Soon! We and the Rafiki Mothers are so eager to open our doors to all these little ones who need a good home.

He is able,
Donna and Ed Bland

Keeping the Faith

After Session meeting last night, I look across the room and Jonathan Olsen is looking at his cell phone, shaking his head in gloom. That could mean only one thing - the Phillies were losing. He confirmed. It was the 8th inning and the Mets were up 2-0. Little did we know of the dramatic comeback about to take place and the Phillies win in the 10th inning with Howard's two-run homerun. Happy endings sometime happen.

Is It Happening?

"The Happening" appears to be happening nearby. Vans and trucks are parked alongside the church on 17th and it looks like more on Pine Street. Stay tuned.

Esperanza volunteers needed

Esperanza has an acute need for volunteers:

  1. Friday, August 31 – We have need for 3-5 volunteers who are capable of lifting & moving heavy boxes to assist during most of this day in off-loading and moving a large delivery of cabinets at our new Kensington site.
  2. Immediate need for assistance in Esperanza’s Medical Records department prior to our move – archiving medical records, photocopying patient records.
  3. Ongoing need for volunteer help in Medical Records to assist in filing/pulling patient charts (4 hrs/week).

For more information on any of these opportunities, please contact Richard Rohrer, Director of Human Resources, 215.807.8616 or rdr@esperanzahealth.com

Satisfaction

So, I am riding my trusty bike to work early this morning for a 7am meeting, when some car honks its horn at me near Chestnut Street. Obviously the driver was trying to intimidate me. He passes by and I catch up at the corner to see that it is Bill "Mr. Bicycle" Langford, the 50 miler guy, who was heading to the same meeting at the church. With satisfaction I whipped past him, and, if it had been a dusty road, I would have left him in the dust, reaching the church well ahead.

Theology in the Morning

The Wednesday morning theology group resumes on Wednesday, September 5 with a breakfast meeting at Marathon Grill, 16th and Sansom. Regular meetings for study will be held each Wednesday at the church, from 7AM to 8AM. This year we're beginning a study of Biblical Theology, by Geerhardus Vos. Please contact Steve Carter (SCarter_Ro829@Verizon.net) if you're interested in joining.

Welcome, Joseph!

Welcome, Joseph Nicholas Sinagra, born 5:07am, 5lbs 15oz, 18.25'', 8/25/07 to Joe and Jessie Sinagra.

Email Woes

We continue to experience difficulty receiving email. If you have emailed me or someone else at Tenth and have not received a reply, it is likely because we did not receive it. Some email is getting through, but I have yet to receive any from last week. If you need to get an email to me, cc mg79clark@yahoo.com for safety.

ESL Help

New Life Northeast Presbyterian Church is in need of volunteers to help teach English to immigrants Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9pm. Classes, specifically for Chinese and Albanians, begin September 17th and continue into December. No prior experience is required, just a desire to teach and serve. If you are interested in helping or have questions, please contact Jason Stryd at 215-280-0176 or jasonstryd@gmail.com.

Biking

So, I'm feeling good about myself Saturday morning. I get up early and ride my bike two whole miles to the church for our Session meeting. Then comes Bill Langford on his fancy bike and outfit. He had ridden 16 miles from his house, which, he tells me was a short ride for him. He normally rides 50 miles on Saturdays. Riding ALL THE WAY between home and the church just doesn't have the satisfying feeling it once did. Maybe I could ride backwards...

The Mice Templar

From Bryan J.L. Glass, the writer/director of mereBreath Drama at Tenth Church, comes a new ongoing comic book series from Image Comics:

THE MICE TEMPLAR #1by BRYAN J. L. GLASS & MICHAEL AVON OEMING
56 PAGES, FC, $3.99

For the young mouse Karic, the Mice Templar are merely an exciting legend. They were real, however, and a vicious civil war left them scattered and all mouse culture in the grip of brutal rat masters. When Karic’s family is enslaved, he realizes their only hope of freedom lies in his paws… if he can only find the courage and strength to become one of the legendary Templar himself. And so begins the extraordinary adventure of magic and wonder, tragedy and hope, faith and valor, and of one small mouse whose destiny might change the entire world.
