Pre-Conference Pictures

Scenes from this morning's pre-conference.

Of Playing Fields and Mortification

Don't forget to check out the Passion-Purity blog that features articles from Tenth and Harvest USA staff. The two most recent include an article by Paul Tripp the "Level Playing Field" we sinners are all on and the hope that such a reality gives. The other is an exerpt from Phil Ryken's recent sermon "Putting Sin to Death." If you heard his sermon, you know how practical it was in applying to the struggle with sexual sin.

Conference News

Fellowship Hall is packed! More chairs are being brought up to accomodate the crowd. Who are they? What have they come to hear? They are teenagers throughout the city and region coming to hear messages on sexual purity. This is the "pre-conference" of the Urban Ministry Conference that begins this eveing on the topic "Sex in the City." You can walk in this evening, beginning at 6:00. Go here for information.

Scarf to Reclaim

Hi Marion,

Recently I pulled a beautiful blue, cashmere scarf out of the lost and found because it belongs to one of my friends. The problem is, it wasn't the friend I thought it was and all I know is that someone I know is missing a very, very nice scarf. Could you please post this on your blog and suggest that the person who is missing a scarf emails me?

Thanks,
Sarah Hao

Preaching Potential

I came across this preacher's trial sermon review from his seminary days. Check the comments section for the name.

"Sermon bears every evidence that you have much ability. Conquer the acadmic shading and you will be exceedingly effective."

Sunday Evening

Dave White (from Harvest USA) will be preaching this Sunday evening on “Sex and the Allegiance of Your Heart” from 1 Thess. 4:1-8. This will be the conclusion of the Urban Ministry Conference. I will be seeing you there, right?

Another Announcement

I don't know how many surprise announcements you can take, but people have been speculating about me and I might as well let the news out.

Next week the Phillies organization will be announcing Charlie Manuel's retirement and my appointment as the next manager for the team. Maybe I can get a discount on tickets for Tenth members.

Serving in Colombia this August

If you have been thinking about serving orphans and impoverished children through a short-term trip this summer, pray about Colombia!

The trip dates are August 5-16 (and, as the Lord wills, August 4-15, 2011). The team hopes to provide some medical care as well as ESL and other learning activities for children. They're also looking for people who could teach a trade (like baking, farming, repair, etc.) or provide business coaching. In short, many skillsets and hobbies could benefit the communities at Santa Marta and Barranquilla!

If you're interested, please attend the informational meeting this Sunday night at 5 pm in Delancey 1West. For more information, email Matthew.

From Sinclair Ferguson

(This note from Sinclair Ferguson was read to the congregation at Sunday's forum.)

Dear Phil and Lisa,

I heard the news of your appointment as the next President of Wheaton yesterday morning—and after a minute of being stunned at the thought of your leaving Tenth—thought that this is probably the only other thing in the cosmos you would be prepared to consider. But I know that yesterday must have felt as though you were putting a dagger into your own hearts—and also into the hearts of so many you love so dearly and have served so well. So my heart went out to you both and to Tenth.

May God give you all—yourselves, the children, the elders and the congregation—special help in these next few months—and beyond—and confirm all your decisions as well as prepare you for such a new ministry as this.

And as we teach our people to be ready to give their best to and for the Lord, may they find joy as well as the pain in giving you up to him—knowing that these are bonds of fellowship and affection that nothing can sever. We continue to remember you and the church.

With much admiration and affection,

Sinclair

Wedding Announcement

It is my pleasure (with permission) to share Cora Hogue's announcement to the staff today. Cora has accepted the marriage proposal of Dr. C. Everett Koop. Their marriage will take place this spring.

Encouragement and Thanks

A reminder. I've started two new blogs that I've added links to on the right-hand column.

Tenth Encouragement - Words you want to send to the church for encouragement.

Tenth Thanks - Words of thanks you want to send to the Rykens (as a family or individuals).

For both, email me at mclark@tenth.org to get your words posted.

Piper on Ryken

Wheaton alumnus John Piper (and fellow South Carolinian, by the way) sent this full statement to Wheaton:

Being president of Wheaton College is an extraordinarly difficult calling. The pressures are huge. The constituencies (administration, faculty, students, alumni, community, wider church) are diverse and demanding. The cultural changes around us are relentless. The temptations to yield where one should stand, or stand where one should yield are enormous. The need for profound biblical depth and strength is great. The call for radical Christ-exalting, God-centered, Bible-saturated servant leadership is urgent. For these reasons I am thankful to God and to the hard-working search committee of the trustees for the nomination of Philip Ryken as the next president of Wheaton College. I believe he is the man for the job. May God give him great grace for Christ and his kingdom.

Welcome Back!

Bruce McDowell, our Minister of Global Outreach, is back in the saddle after three months of sabbatical leave. The staff is glad to have him back in the building with us, as we are all pleased to have him back at his duties leading us in the global outreach enterprise.

Boice book republished

The Alliance Bookstore is pleased to announce that “The Christ of the Empty Tomb” by James Boice, long out of print and unavailable for many years, has been republished and is now available at a special introductory price. With an introduction by Linda Boice, this timely book focuses our thoughts on the real reason for Easter: our justification and deliverance.
