The Undistracted Widow

John Muhlfield, pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Harleysville, (he preached at Phil Kirkland's ordination), sent this notice of book to me:

Please allow me a brief moment to commend to you a new resource that's just come out- The Undistracted Widow: Living for God After Losing Your Husband, by Carol W. Cornish (Crossway, 2010).

Carol is a faithful member of our congregation, an experienced Christian counselor, and a widow herself who has brought great glory to God through her biblical and wise treatment of this important topic. It is a great resource for those who have personally known the pain of losing a spouse, as well as for others who seek to care for those who have. Carol has provided an honest "inside" view of things, always with an eye toward the Savior who alone can comfort the mourning. Her writing contains the sorts of personal stories and reflections that add authenticity and "readability" for a popular audience, while not forsaking a truly substantive biblical look and the hope that is ours in Christ.

Of Parenting and Marriage

This Sunday's Tenth Press article features a story by Steve Sarkisian confessing his own failures in parenting his children. It is part of a promotion for the parenting seminar to be held at Tenth October 22-23 - Getting the Heart of Parenting. (Sounds like a Paul Tripp seminar...) To sign up for that conference or learn more about it, click the Tenth website link here.

Who is Steve Sarkisian, you ask. Steve and his wife Gail are regular attenders at Tenth. You will see them on Sunday evenings sitting on the second (or third?) row in the 17th street side center section. (Yes, I know where you sit!) He has had a successful business and is now keeping Paul Tripp on track as his assistant. Here is a link to a video of Steve talking about his marriage (as a promotion for Paul's marriage seminar, which was held at Tenth last year).

New Parish 1 Bible Study

The Polens will be hosting a new small group at their home (Broad and Reed Sts.) starting September 15 at 7:30 pm.  If you are interested in joining us, please contact Robert Polen (rpolen@tenth.org).

Sunday Road Closures

Got this notice:

The 4th Annual Bike Philly bicycle ride through Philadelphia will take place on Sunday, September 12, 2010. Some streets will be closed on and off from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. These include: Benjamin Franklin Parkway (from the Art Museum to 16th and Arch), Lombard (between Front and 16th Street) and 16th Street, (between Lombard and City Hall).

Hmm...think I'll have to ride my bike along the river walk this Sunday to church.

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday to my daughter Jean, once living in Houston now in Oslo and celebrating in Brussels, when she is not jumping out of planes.

Happy Birthday to my sister Kathy born the same day but a few years earlier.

And, just enjoyed a birthday breakfast one day early for Terri Taylor.

Passing Presbytery

Robert Polen is now licensed to preach...a very dangerous man! Actually, he was licensed already by another presbytery, but that was in Arizona, outlaw territory.

John Sullivan was received under care of the presbytery.

The meeting was held at liberti east. Check out their website and good work.

Presbytery Examination

Philadelphia Presbytery meets tonight. Duties of the presbytery include examining and overseeing the preparation of men for the ministry. Two Tenth members will be examined tonight. John Sullivan will be examined to come under care of presbytery. This is the first step towards eventual ordination. John will be examined on his Christian testimony and sense of call to the ministry.

Robert Polen will be examined for licensure, the step below ordination and one required for a person preaching in the pulpit. Robert's examination is more extensive and demanding than John's. He has already passed written examination, as well as an extensive oral examination by the credentialing committee. Tonight is the final stand! He will be answering (hopefully) questions in doctrine, Bible, and church government.

By the way, the moderator of presbytery is none other than Tenth elder Brian "Rule with an Iron Hand" Esterly.

Thursday Night Prayer

You are invited to gather for prayer Thursday night in the home of John and Nell Evans in Mt. Airy. (Call 215.844.2245 for directions. Time: 7:30-8:30 prayer. Come at 7:00 for discussion prior.

Prayer will be for Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. A young man, whom the Evans know, has had to leave the city for safety and will be present for the prayer meeting. If you cannot attend, be praying for him and his family (mother and siblings) who have also had to leave.

Parish 6 is forming a Parish 6 Fellowship Committee. Anyone interested in joining this Committee please email Mimi Warburton or call 856-642-2013.

At the Museum

You may not have known, but another gift we gave to the Rykens is a membership to Chicago's Science and Industry museum. As you can see, Chicago's idea of science and industry differs from Philadelphia's.

Northeast Church Planting

Two of our church members, Bruce and Rebecca Eaton, are involved in church planting in Northeast Philadelphia in the Oxford Avenue area. They serve with American Missionary Fellowship (whose Senior Director, by the way, is Tenth elder Bryce Bartruff). If you are interested in being a part of the work or learning more about it, email Bruce.

Speaking the Truth in Love

Next Sunday the sermon will be "The Truth in Love," from Ephesians 4:15. The full phrase, "Speaking the Truth in Love," is the title of a manuscript I wrote several years ago. It presents the principles I use for carrying out my own ministry and is useful for everyone who wants to improve the way they relate to others. You will find the full manuscript, as well as downloads for individual chapters at the DMC website.

Attaining Maturity

The manuscript of yesterday's sermon, Attaining Maturity, is now available at the DMC website. You will also find there the video/audio postings, as well.
