Planet Narnia

I have finally gotten to reading Planet Narnia, the literary critique of the Narnia Chronicles It is written by Lewis scholar Michael Ward and presents the "secret code" for understanding the interlocking theme of the books, which is that each book presents the outlook of the "seven heavens" as understood in medieval cosmology. The book is brilliant.

Friend for Chinese-speaking father-in-law

My father-in-law is 76 years old and speaks Vietnamese and Teochew Chinese.  He is not a Christian, but I have been praying for him.  I live in Maryland, so it is hard to check in with his daily needs.  He lives in the Olney section of Philadelphia, across from Olney High School.  He does speak English but would probably prefer speaking in Teochew, Mandarin, or Vietnamese.

Welcome, Josiah Benjamin Elias!

Dan and Lori Schantz are pleased to announce the arrival of Josiah Benjamin Elias, born July 1, 1:11 am, 9lbs 1oz. in Richmond, VA.

One Year Old

This coming Sunday, July 10, Grace and Peace will be marking the first anniversary of holding worship services. We give thanks to God for the work he has done and continues to do through our daughter church. July 31, a commission of Session will travel down to 18th and Alter Streets to recognize Jonathan Olsen for his service at Tenth. Jonathan came on full-time staff June 2001, though he had already been serving in the college ministry.
Look for a Tenth Press article July 31 that will speak more fully of how the Lord bless Tenth Church through his (and his family's) time with us.

Crashing City College and Career

I am viewing Sunday's announcements and see that City College and Career will start meeting during the summer after the evening service down in the Catacombs. I think I might crash it. My bike helmet should make me look younger.

Young Adult Survey

Young adults (and you know who you are), we need you to fill out a survey about young adult ministries. It doesn't take long (so I am told, not being a young adult myself). Click here. Sunday is the last day to participate.

Amazing Grace 360

The PCA's women's ministry is holding a women's conference October 7-9 in Atlanta, GA, the theme being "Amazing Grace 360." For information about the conference, use this link. If you are interested in attending, email Janice Rankins, who is helping attenders get connected.

Reception Help

There will be a reception at Tenth following Susan McDowell's memorial service on Saturday, July 23, 11:00. If you would like to contribute food for the reception, you can sign up using this link or by contacting Joyce Ostertag

Chronic Pain

Pastor Chris O’Brien, who is serving on the intern staff, is ministering specifically to Tenth members with chronic illness and pain. He is visiting members now and developing further ministry. If you, or someone you know in the church, are contending with chronic physical pain, please email Chris.

Free double-sized box spring available

We have a double-sized box spring (just the box spring, not the mattress) that is in good condition.  It was used about two years. We moved the bed up to our third floor but the box spring wouldn't fit through the doorway / stairwell, so we had to replace it with one that is not as deep. Anyone who will pick it up at our home in Havertown can have it for free by contacting us.

Crawl, Baby, Crawl!

I don't know. Some parents like to start their children's athletic careers early. But while the child is still in diapers? See Dylan Hubley outpace the pretenders in the Narberth 4th of July Baby Crawl.

Sign Language Interpreter Needed

We give thanks for Jennifer Janney's faithful service as regular substitute ASL interpreter since 2006 and for Roz McKelvey's ongoing ministry as regular ASL interpreter.  Pray for God's blessing on Jennifer and her family and provision of a new regular substitute interpreter.

Again, Roz continues to be the regular ASL interpreter. We are looking for an ASL interpreter to do the 3rd and 5th Sunday evening services.

Searching for Housing and Roommates

I am a female professional working in the city and am looking for one or two other women to share housing with. I'm a 26 year old Christian and dietitian who recently moved to the area and started attending Tenth. If you are interested, please email me.

The McDowell family has posted an obituary for Susan, which can be accessed by this link.

Sublet/rent University City apartment

I am subletting my apartment for the months of July and August. It is a very lovely one-bedroom with a very bright living room, hard wood floors and updated kitchen. The rent is $710 per month and this includes internet, gas, water, and heat. It is located in a quiet building close to the universities on Osage Avenue (between 44th & 45th). If you are interested in signing a lease for the following leasing year, then you might also be able to do that with the landlord.

If you would like more information please contact me.

Vacation Pictures

I have been asked when I am going to post pictures from our trip to Norway, England, and Scotland. That is a tedious job to do. But do not despair. My daughter Jean, unlike me, loves to post pictures - hundreds, thousands of pictures. Check out Jean's blog. Scroll down and you will come to pictures of our trip.

McDowell Memorial Gifts

The McDowell family have suggested three options for sending gifts in memory of Susan. They are:
