God with Us

You will notice two recent postings regarding the passing of Tenth members' parents, two of them today, June 15. This day is the 12th anniversary of James Boice's death. Here are his words to us as we contemplate the passing of those we have looked up to and perhaps even our own near departure.

General Assembly

Carroll Wynne is getting ready for his trip to General Assembly next week in Louisville. GA is the annual gathering of Ruling and Teaching Elders from all the churches in the denomination. It is the third court in the Presbyterian government system, the other two being the local church Session and the regional Presbytery. If you wish to see what will be going on, check out the official site.

Confidence in the Lord

Proverbs 3:25-26

Do not be afraid of sudden terror
or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes,
for the LORD will be your confidence
and will keep your foot from being caught.

Prayer Request

Be in prayer for church members who have lost parents recently: Vera Matejova - father; Dave Collins - mother.

Preparing for Sunday Preaching

If you want to be really prepared for Sunday's sermon, either read my sermon on Ephesians 6:10-14 or listen to it. For you history buffs I will also be using three men for illustrations - Charles Lee, Horatio Gates, and Benedict Arnold.

Smiling Faces

I don't know if I can stand such a cheerful face first thing in the morning at work. I have the latest byFaith magazine, our denomination's magazine, in front of me. Taking up the full cover is Phil Ryken smiling jovially at me. He is being interviewed on his latest book, Loving the Way Jesus Loves. Shaking off the shock, I peruse through the magazine only to find the face of Rick Phillips looking at me with his mischievous grin. I am feeling a bit rattled. If you want to see Phil, click here and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Volunteers Needed

Is this the UN?

"No, this is not a skirt," Liam emphatically told Tenth's kids. His appearance in his native Highland dress--I mean kilt!--marked the start of WOW. The summer Sunday evening kid's program introduces children to what God is doing in other cultures. Leaders sported international garb at the kickoff and kids lined up to visit the passport office.The program runs during the evening service and has classes for kids 4 through sixth grade. This week's program will feature a guest from Southeast Asia and every night ends with ice cream!

Divided Loyalty?

Once again my daughter Jean will have to prove her devotion to her father. For the third straight year the school of her husband (what is his name?), Florida, is going to the College World Series. Unfortunately for that school, South Carolina is also going. Florida has played bravely, even making it last year to the finals but, alas, against Carolina, who has not only played in the last two World Series but has won the championship. Florida's first round opponent this year? Yes, South Carolina - my South Carolina, who is on a 21 win streak in NCAA playoff games. Go Gamecocks!

Tree of Life

Proverbs 3:16-18

Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her;
those who hold her fast are called blessed.

Value of Wisdom

Proverbs 3:13-15

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom,
and the one who gets understanding,
for the gain from her is better than gain from silver
and her profit better than gold.
She is more precious than jewels,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.
