PHILADELPHIA EXHIBITION EXPLORES THE BEATITUDES IN EXPRESSIONIST ART
Attention Editors: Images immediately available electronically upon request.

Philadelphia, PA… New Zealand oil painter, Cornelis Monsma, recently created a series of oil paintings with his distinct expressionist style, exploring the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes, which he translates into colorful contemporary images, will make their debut at White Stone Gallery, located in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia. The BEATITUDES exhibit begins with a reception from 7 – 9 PM, August 15 and ends September 28.

Friesian-Dutch born Cornelis Monsma is inspired by the paintings of Marc Chagall. Monsma describes his own work as, “Contemporary Christian art without a religious aftertaste.” For over forty years, he has built a solid career with vibrant use of color and unique design to express deep scriptural meaning and purpose. Monsma is able to portray scripture visually in a way, which seems to capture the meaning of the verse and display it in a fresh perspective. Some curators have tried to minimize the biblical inspiration to his work – to the point of saying the only way they would display his work is without titles.

Vanessa Wright Hollifield, who pioneered the Beatitudes theme for this exhibit, joins Monsma with her expressionist stained glass work. Hollifield and Monsma have separately created their Beatitude pieces throughout the year.

White Stone is located at 4219 Main Street in Philadelphia. White Stone’s hours are Wed - Sat 11-7, Sun 12-5. For more information, visit whitestonegallery.com. To contact the gallery, call 215.482.7700 or email info@whitestonegallery.com

I really think Monsma's quote, "Contemporary Christian art without a religious aftertaste" is just a perfect descriptiong of Chagall's work as well. It is obviously themed with Jewish/Christian/Biblical implications, but it is not overbearing and instead it is more of a photograph of the events some 2 thousand years ago. Even though it is a colorful drawing riddled with fantasy.

If you like Chagall, I would suggest you check these guys out:

A very useful resource. And thank you for the wonderful post.
