Of Greed

Proverbs 15:27

Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household,
but he who hates bribes will live.

It is bad enough to be greedy. Such a person cannot be satisfied with having his needs met, and he is always discontent, wanting to have more. But to be greedy for unjust gain magnifies his own troubles and the troubles he creates for his household.
Now his discontent is mixed with fear – a fear of getting caught for his crimes. Like the addicted gambler, he needs to experience risk, but that same risk creates stress. That stress leads to inner turmoil and to outer turmoil in the home. His family distrusts him; he loses their respect. His bad reputation is imposed upon them. They suffer the consequences of his actions.

But the person of integrity who hates bribes lives in peace. What he may lack in money, he is enriched by a good reputation and by respect in the home. His children look up to him; his spouse respects and trusts him. He is a model for others.

Greed leads to unjust behavior to satisfy that greed which can never be satisfied. Integrity springs from a love for righteousness and hatred for injustice. It leads to contentment in doing what is right. It leads to a fulfilling life.
