She's My Sister
My name is Mallory Briggs and I am a second year law student at Villanova University. I am involved with a project of the American Bible Society called, "She's My Sister," and wanted to let you know about a couple of events that are going on with the project this summer and see whether any of your church members would be interested in being involved.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been called the rape capital of the world. The She's My Sister project brings trauma counseling, job training, healthcare, and vital basic needs, such as food, shelter, and water to the women in the DRC who are victims of this violent sexual abuse. For more information about the project, and to hear actual women's stories of survival, you can visit www.congosister.org. Also, here is a short 3 minute video that tells the story of Conseletta, a woman from the DRC who can no longer walk because of the brutal raping she endured http://vimeo.com/24478983
There are two events for the project going on this summer which I wanted to share with your church. First, my brother and 9 other college students are cycling from Florida to Maine to raise money and awareness about the brutal raping that is happening to women in the DRC. They are stopping at churches along their route and making presentations about the project and about the needs of the women. On June 23, from 7-8:30, they will be at the National Christian Conference Center in Valley Forge. We are holding a reception for them, with light hors d'oeuvres and desserts, to greet, pray for, listen to and encourage the cyclists.
The second event is a 5K run/walk on June 25 at 9 a.m., also at the National Christian Conference Center in Valley Forge. This event is also designed to raise money and awareness for the She's My Sister project. For more information about the run, you can visit www.sister5k.org.
Thanks,
Mallory Briggs
