Erickson Rojas in Concert

Many considered him to be the highlight of last year's Music Around the World concert. He is back for a solo performance this Friday night, 7:30, in the sanctuary. He is Erickson Rojas who spent many young years here at Tenth. Here is a bio:

Erickson Rojas was born in Santa Clara, Cuba. He studies piano under the legendary Leon Fleisher in the graduate performance diploma program at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where, as a scholarship student, he completed his master of music degree. Prior to entering Peabody, he studied with Distinguished Professor Dr. Samuel Hsu at the Philadelphia Biblical University. There he received his bachelor degrees in both Music/Piano Performance and Biblical Science. Initially, Mr. Rojas attended Cuba's Olga Alonzo, Paulita Concepcion, and A.G. Caturla conservatories. Later in the USA he studied at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music under Madame Eleanor Sokoloff. He also received private studies from the renowned pianists Charles Abramovic and Susan Starr. Other lessons and master classes were taken from Claude Frank, Gary Graffman, Seymour Lipkin, and Jorge Luis Prats, among others.

Mr. Rojas began studying the instrument at the age of eight, and made his solo debut in Cuba in 1991, when he won his first competition. Since then he has been the winner of numerous awards and honors, including first prize in Cuba's Amadeo Roldan and U.N.E.A. Competitions. As a child prodigy, Mr. Rojas has been featured in a story on CNN, as well as in various international radio and television broadcasts, including performances on the Telemundo and Univision networks. In Pennsylvania, he won the Ambler Symphony Orchestra Competition, and the Outstanding Young Christian Artists Competions, among others. He has perfomed with the Orchestra of the University of Yucatan (Mexico), the Olney Symphony Orchestra, and the PBU Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Rojas is the music director and organist at the United Methodist Church of the Redeemer in Philadelphia. In addition to piano, he enjoys studying organ, percussio, conducting, theology, and philosophy.
