Getaway Needed
A certain minister on the pastoral staff is looking for a getaway place to study October 30-November 1. That's two nights. Any suggestions, offers? Should be within a two drive of the city.
This site is for communicating with the members and friends of Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia. D. Marion Clark, Executive Minister Email: mclark@tenth.org

I havn't a suggestion of where to stay, but I do suggest that he ensures that the hotel he will be in has a Tempur-pedic bed. I stayed on one for three days last week. I havn't slept that well since I was last sedated for surgery.

Are you able to answer these questions about that?:
1. Did you look at the mattress label to see exactly which model this was (Classic, Deluxe, etc.)?
2. Where did this occur, so that one might look into it? Was there a room number even?
Thanks.
P. S. Also, what is your height, weight and build? Remember, this is anonymous. :-)
For minister's getaway for studying, I think the Tempur-Pedic site may have a search tool for finding hotels where you can try them: http://www.tempurpedic.com/tempurcmsvb/
Alright, alright...
I am no longer anonymous.
My Height is 5'10"; Weight 175 (on my good days); Build is indicative of latter parenthetical statement.
I enjoy the common reoccurance of a herniated disc, sleep on a 7 year-old torture-chamberesque matress, have three young children who love to be picked up an thrown around by yours truly, and am really struggling to get a grip on this whole ergonomics thing.
The model was a Classic Queen (begining around $1500- for those who have the means- Google it) and the room number was 345 (non-smoking) at the Piscataway Holiday Inn (NJ). That's a bit far from Philly, so the pastor in question should look into a closer hotel that might have such dreammy accomidations- pun intended.
BTW- It is my understanding that the "sleep number bed" is wonderful. My only question about is this- If the electricity goes out, how does it work? I say, Go memory-foam. Awww yeah.
you may want to look at Tel Hai Camp (www.telhaicamp.org). I think they have a cabin where pastors can stay for free.
all these comments on mattresses are interesting.
One thing to know about buying mattresses - is that there is generally HUGE wiggle room in the price. It's honestly like buying a car. There is definitely room to dicker down if you are at a mattress store - and possibly even some dept. stores.
And you may even be able to get some price competition among various retailers.
To actually address the question Marion was asking - you may try Pendle Hill http://www.pendlehill.org/
which is a Quaker retreat center in Wallingford. The grounds seem nice, but the accomodations are sort of like a rustic dorm room.
Thanks, djb. It turns out that the Classic is the one I have thought about trying, but I've been reluctant to take the plunge yet.
Sleep Number used to go by another name. I had one years ago and had to return it. It was very unplesant for me. When I went to one of their stores in South Jersey not too long ago to check them out again because of all the commercials, I felt the same way. There's also a guy in the church who said he had a bad experience with one.
If the Tempur worked so well for you, I recommend you get it - 90 or 120 day trial period, too. Otherwise, you could also try a foam layers kit or foam toppers on top of your existing mattress. There's an excellent free forum about all this at www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=wtb-mattress. There is also another forum at www.memoryfoam.com.
If you still want to try air, there are cheaper alternatives, such as www.thinkaero.com. It may also be a bit helpful to check out postings at www.epinions.com.
Now, as for the minister's study getaway: would Messiah College perhaps allow such a thing? I don't know, but one might want to look at www.Messiah.edu for contact info. I think it might fit into the driving time figure.
P. S., djb: did you sleep on your side(s), back, stomach, or some combo thereof? Thanks. :-).
One more thing: if you want to try the Classic, djb, I believe they've recently added one more inch of height, so the one you tried might have been 8" vs. 9" now or some such figure. Not sure that would make much difference but something to know.
You are welcome to continue the interesting and informative discussion on mattresses. Just to let you know, our mystery minister took up an offer from a couple in the church.
I slept on my side, back, and perhaps even did a little sleep-walking (now that's a DEEP sleep). I'm guessing the sleep-walking thing because the hotel management asked me one morning to stop sining in the lounge at night ... I don't recall doing so.
So, yeah, Tempur-pedic for a good night's rest: on the back or side, it pretty much adjusts and molds to your body throughout the night. Also, it seems to have some sort of natural (or, foam-natural) heat source, for I was comfortably warm, too.
Thanks, Marion, for the blog space to discuss matresses!
Thanks Pastor Clark (Marion), and thanks again, djb. DJB, if you want to get a deal with Tempur, here's what you can do: get on their mailing list by calling or contacting them some way to ask to receive info on their products, foam sample and DVD. Then, you should start receiving offers of various kinds, e.g., expensive free pillows to go with your order, desirable payment arrangements, possibly without interest, etc. You can even tell them that's what you're after, for the sake of conscience. I did that, and so did a relative of mine. Nice thing is, it's not much mail really, and the offers are valuable. Also, they don't send them for very long. In fact, I even wished they had continued sending them well beyond when they stopped. (My relative may have gotten them for a longer time than me, however.)
Yes, memory foam has a reputation for warmth. For some it's a problem, but I believe I would most likely like it, and it appears you did, too. If you want to try some of their other models in a store (but if the Classic isn't broken, perhaps it shouldn't be fixed?) you can find them at Mattress Giant. There's one in CC near the Wendy's on 15th and Chestnut. They should have the Classic, Deluxe, and one or two more. With the Classic, you can most likely get it softer with a topper if that became necessary, but if you start too soft, then there may be no way to do the opposite. Some might suggest that using a topper on top of memory foam could be problematic, but I doubt it. After all, that's essentially what foam layer kits do.
Latex foam may be popular with some, especially at the forum, but I have doubts personally. The "whats the-" forum used to seem tilted toward it, so you can keep that in mind.
Someone suggested a cheaper route at epinions.com, by putting a Bergad topper on top of an inexpensive foam base. I may want to try that, too, maybe even with two tops. Bergad is at www.isoform.com, and the epinions.com links is here: http://www.epinions.com/content_197141302916. I've wondered about possibly using something from Penney's as a base: http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/ProductsHOM.aspx?ItemID=0fa8455&GrpTyp=ENS&CmCatId=SearchResults.
Ok, time for break. :-) I hope this is all worth something to you. I felt I should share some of this for the benefit of all, as it is already proven by DJB that others can experience difficulty and perhaps benefit from an infusion of new facts. Please pray for me because despite all my knowledge, I still don't know what to do about this matter, and need the Lord's provision, as mere knowledge doesn't guarantee anything.
And do you know what's really ironic? I just bought a domain name to use for a competing forum. In fact, I bought two. :-) Yes, please pray for me.
Be well. :-)
You are a fountain of information. Thanks. We'll look into it. I do like free samples ... except those free medicine samples in the mail- stay away from those.
Wanted to leave you with the last word, but I've realized I do have to metion that with memory foam there are some safety concerns. It's not all the same, and you have to be careful about looking at cheaper alternatives. There are also different manufacturing processes and countries of origin that might use supposedly harmful things like something called PBDE's, etc. There's material about this on that "whatsthe-" forum, too, and talk about this in the fAQ's at isoform.com. One should be very careful with sellers on eBay, too, as some of them may be pushing the junk.
For example, one could do a search on the term Sensus (popular brand) at eBay, then look for sales by a seller called foamusa. Scroll down in some of the sales if you want to check what this seller has to say, such as warnings titled "FACTS ABOUT E-BAY MEMORY FOAM SCAMS TO WATCH OUT FOR !"
