Of Books

reformation21 is asking what 10 books to recommend to every pastor. Click here to see Phil's list. He even names his favorite book next to the Bible. Click "Comments" and give me two books you recommend just because they are fun to read.

Here are 4 books that I have found to be very influential in my life:
1)Jesus: Divine Messiah (Robert Reymond)
2)The Coming of the Kingdom (Hermann Ridderbos)
3)Perspectives on Pentecost (Richard Gaffin)
4)The Progress of Redemption (Willem Van Gemeren)

Well, I've got odd taste in books, but in terms of books that are a lot of fun intellectually speaking, I'd say [1] Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish and [2] Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae (which says a lot about my idea of "fun").

In terms of fun fiction, [1] J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings and [2] C.S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia (with J.K. Rowling a close third).

And, since Phil brought it up, in terms of hymnals (more "enjoyment" than "fun," I suppose), [1] the 1958 Lutheran Service Book and Hymnal and [2] the old blue Trinity Hymnal I grew up with.

The assignment...to list 2 "fun" books...I love reading the "Winnie the Pooh" books. I also love "The Wind in the Willows." Not very intellectual, but enjoyable and relaxing.

My 'fun' reading consists largely of comic books. Of late I've been enjoying Astonishing X-men written by Joss Whedon. Adventures of Superman has also had some very good writing on it lately.

My recent reading habits seem to run with authors/series that I ejoy and though I enjoy nonfiction I wouldn't always call them "fun" books, anyway here are some I am finding fun:

1) the Catherine LeVendeur series by Sharan Newman (historical novels/mystery set in France in the 12th century)

2) The Ender and Ender's Shadow novels by Orson Scott Card (Science Fiction)

3) The Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawerence (historical mystery series set in 79AD written for children but I am loving them, this is my current "new find")

4) The Little House books by Laura Ingles Wilder. these are the first books with which I remember experience the love of reading and they are still favorites.

5) The Harry Potter Books

6) Dorthy Sayers novels
