The Purpose of Thrones

Proverbs 16:12

It is an abomination to kings to do evil,
for the throne is established by righteousness.

It is terrible enough to do evil. Man was made in the image of God, and every wicked act is a reminder of the great Fall. But to do evil from a position of authority magnifies evil’s perversion. Whether one be a king or a low-level manager, such positions are created to accomplish good and to restrain wrong-doing. To use these positions to accomplish evil and to punish good is truly an abomination.

It is said that power corrupts. Closer to the truth is that power releases the corruption that is in us all. Be wary of yourself, whether you have authority over millions or one.

And all the more give praise and thanksgiving for our Righteous King who sits on the eternal throne. Give praise to the Sovereign God who is seeing that all things – even evil – work for his goals, which are good. Give thanks for our King who rescued us from our evil state. For we were an abomination, but now have been delivered from sin and are now justified. Give thanks for our King who will return in glory, who will raise us from the dead, who will give us glory, who will turn us and all things over to his Father. Give thanks for this great throne that is established by righteousness.
