The Life of Richard Smith

Richard Keene Smith was born on September 12, 1923 and died on July 30, 2011. He and his wife, the late Marcia Roos Smith, had two daughters, Sylvia Duggan (Paul) of Philadelphia, PA and Emily Wiegand (Walter) of Clarendon Hills, Il. They are graduates of Breck's classes of 1978 and 1980. Their four grandchildren are Nathan and Joel Wiegand and Victoria and Andrew Duggan.

Dick was preceded in death by his twin brother Carl Wernicke Smith and older brother Allen Macy Smith II. He came from a military family with brothers, father, and grandfather all having served in the armed forces. During WWII, he served in the European and Pacific Theatres of War as a BAR man and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant-Major in the paratroops. He received eleven decorations.

Ordained in 1952 at Trinity Cathedral, Duluth, he served three churches there, and also in Moose Lake, Two Harbors, Taconite, Nenana (Alaska), South St. Paul, Farmington, Prairie Island, Basswood Grove, Cannon Falls, and Bloomington. He was instrumental in restoring the church in Belle Plaine and starting one in Shakopee.

Dick was particularly proud of having presented 27 persons for ordination and received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. He graduated from West High School in Minneapolis, attended Carleton College and graduated from the University of Minnesota and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary.

Fr. Smith was active in jail and prison ministries for over 40 years, as well as charismatic, ecumenical, and healing ministries. He was President of Mission of Mercy with primary interest in Haiti. As "Chaplain," Dick served at Breck School, The Episcopal Church Home, The Minneapolis Police, Minnesota National Guard, Civil Air Patrol, Department of the American Legion, Department of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forty and Eight, Sons of the American Revolution, Society of Mayflower Descendants, Osman and Zurah Temples of the Shrine.

He also served on boards of the Bloomington Rotary, St. Paul Chapter American Red Cross, St. Paul Chapter American Cancer Society, District Chairman Boy Scouts of America, Fort Snelling Park Association, Order of St. Luke, and Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. He was elected Outstanding Young Man of the Year by South St. Paul's Chamber of Commerce and also chaired the United Fund there.

He was made an honorary Ojibwe (Makaday Maqua) and Lakota.
