National Bible Week
Philadelphia has been selected as the NATIONAL BIBLE CITY for 2009 by the National Bible Association (NBA). The NBA is an inclusive "big-tent" organization made up of people from Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Mormon and other faith traditions with the goal to provide a platform to encourage people to read their Bible. National Bible Week is November 22-28 and the following events are scheduled:
Philadelphia Faith and Freedom Guide This free compact booklet will guide you on an exploration of many historic sites in Philadelphia, as it highlights the role the Bible has played throughout the history of our city and nation.. It also includes a Bible reading guide that identifies seventy-six Biblical texts that can be read as you take your “tour” of Philadelphia. Your tour can be done simply by reading the Philadelphia Faith and Freedom Guide or by going to this www.biblecity.org.
The Story of Never Giving Up This free Bible reading guide is designed specifically for young adults. Developed by Scripture Union in conjunction with the American Bible Society, this helpful guide presents The Essential 100 Bible verses that one should read in order to learn the life changing story of the Bible. To learn more, visit http://www.godsstory.org/ or http://www.biblecity.org/ and click on the youth page.
Free Bibles The American Bible Society is making free Bibles available to anyone who needs one. Just go on-line at http://www.godsstory.org/ or http://www.biblecity.org/ to learn how to receive a Bible. The Jewish Publication Society is also giving away free copies of the Jewish Bible to the first 100 people, which can also be found online at http://www.biblecity.org./
Free Concert Join us for a musical gathering featuring the Philadelphia Boys Choir along with local and regional spiritual music artists, choirs, youth singers, and cantors. This will be held at 6 PM on Sunday, November 22nd at the Mount Airy Church of God in Christ at 6401 Ogontz Avenue, Philadelphia. A free-will offering will be taken at the concert to help offset its costs. Check http://www.biblecity.org/ for details and updates.
Public Reading of the Bible, Monday, November 23 at noon The NBA is calling on all residents in the Greater Philadelphia Area to gather together at school, work, or your place of worship to read the Bible aloud together! We recommend that you take turns reading an Essential 100 passage, or one of your own favorite texts of Scripture. These readings should be done without comment, just allowing God’s Word to be heard aloud. In this way we reflect the ancient practice of Israel to read the Scriptures in public as seen in Nehemiah 8, and we honor the call of St. Paul who wrote in 1 Tim. 4:13, “to give attention to the public reading of Scripture.”
