Cora Signs with Mets

Cora signs one-year deal with Mets
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Cora and the New York Mets finalized a $2 million, one-year contract Thursday, giving the team a backup infielder who also could displace Luis Castillo at second base.

"You win championships with a 25-man roster," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said.

"Cora has been an integral part of teams that have been to the postseason in four of the last five years."

Cora hit .270 last season in 75 games and 152 at-bats for the Boston Red Sox.

"I'm excited to join the Mets," Cora said in a statement released by the team. "We have a talented roster. I'm committed to do everything I can in any role to win."

Cora could earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses: $250,000 for each of 110, 120, 130 and 140 games started.

Oh, dear, Marion! You have blown my cover and now everyone who reads your blog knows my secret. Next thing I know the guys from the Capital Campaign will be after me for a tithe of my increased earnings.
