Hillsdale Inquiry

Samuel Matej sent this request in:

Has anybody from our church or from the Christian community close (spiritually) to ours attended the Hillsdale College in Michigan? We would like to learn especially about the Hillsdale's spiritual atmosphere, their commitment to (teaching) the Christian values, opportunities for the spiritual growth, and if (and how) the students are being helped to understand their field of study from the biblical perspective. I can be reached at 610-328-1651, matej@mail.med.upenn.edu)

All these questions are one which I also had regarding Hillsdale College! If you receive any answers Sam, could you share them with me? Thanks! Cheryl@rishon1.com

Hillsdale is technically not a Christian college. Hillsdale does not endorse any particular religion although a majority of the professors are Christians and the religion department is strongly Christian, as is the English department.

The fact is, there is spiritual life there for those who seek it, there are lots of churches that cater to the students and a lot of Christian groups on campus, but on the other hand there is plenty of opportunity to go 4 years there and never go to church or never hear the gospel.

This is because Hillsdale is a university dedicated to the liberal arts first. Remember that before you send yourself or anyone else there. It is not an explicitly Christian university and never again will be (it was Freewill Baptist until around 1914 I believe).

Cheers,

Daniel Greene
